The playcall was fine. The roll out was designed to allow Mariota to run if he was given an opening.

Options went as follows as far as I can tell

    1. Douglas in the flat off a semi-pick play
    2. Mariota runs it in
    3. Mariota hits Matthews on a cutback route *this may have been improvisational kinda hard to tell.

Chiefs played #1 and #2 pretty good. Potentially douglas could have scored but it would have been close. But if Mariota had an extra second he would have seen Matthews was open and the play would have worked.

But the roll-out is definitely designed to give Mariota a chance to run it in.

Going for two does give us more of a chance to win (eliminates the small % of a tie game). league wide odds for going for two are slightly above 50% IIRC. Don't forget the extra point is not 100% accurate anymore.

Plus I believe the players wanted it and nobody wanted to be out in the cold anymore. Both teams sustained injuries and it was a miserable day. I'd take the 50/50 there again.

I can't believe I'm saying this, but he absolutely should be in the conversation.

CBS ranks Mularkey 10th for COTY as of last week, surely yesterdays win bumps him up a spot or 2

Then why not go for two after every TD? A lot of those two-point attempts aren't with the game on-the-line. I'd love to see the stat when it is.

Even worse was the play. The Chiefs are bad vs. the run. They essentially cut the field in half with a rollout. If the idea is to go for two because the Chiefs had been on the field a lot, then knock them backwards and run it in as they did easily the previous play.

I would have tied the game. The defense was playing well and was rested. You might get another shot to get the ball back anyway or, in the least, have momentum going into the OT if KC runs out the clock after getting a first down.

I see where all you who liked the idea are coming from. Reid likely doesn't run the ball three times to burn the clock. He probably opens up the playbook more and, maybe, Smith gets them in FG range. I get all that.

I still think it wasn't the right call and Mariota, Walker and Succop (with Reid calling a timeout) bailed him out—just like he botched the two-point try vs. the Vikings earlier in the season.

Sorry. I think Mularkey has done wonders changing the culture but he's no where close to COTY material, IMO.

I do agree with Jeff on the two point try. I was stunned they went for it.

I did not agree with the 2 point try....but it all worked out in the end.
As for COTY........based on other coaches this year and the turnaround this year (especially if we win out and make the playoffs)......I don't see why he shouldn't be...IMO.

At this point, I look at it like golf somedays........
It's not a game of how, but a game of how many.
