You'd still be paying Clowney, Fowler, Mariota if you cut them after three years and they are healthy.

Offset language doesn't cancel the 4th year of a rookie contract, it protects a healthy player from being dumped for no reason, and then getting a lower salary from a new team. The "offset" is the base salary doesn't make up the difference, which is pennies to an NFL team. The Titans are being stubborn, which is no surprise since Underwood goes back to the failure in Houston that led the Oilers to Nashville, anyhow. Old world thinking in a new world league.

If Mariota's agent seriously would rather have his client sit out a whole a year, possibly causing to destroy his good guy/modest/team player image, cost him money and having a player with system concerns not get the experience he needs. Marcus needs a new agent.

And if the Titans would rather lose a 2nd overall picked potential franchise QB than guarantee his whole salary, they deserve to suffer in the cellar of the NFL.

It's like a girl who gets beat by her boyfriend on the reg but she is dumb enough to stay because she thinks she can change. Can't help but to feel they are both stupid and apparently deserve each other.

I'm pretty much to that point right now. They are both stupid and therefor perfect together.

PortlandDuck as already mentioned it many times that Winston doesn't have because of his off field issues. Did you guys miss that?

    Good luck with Mett then!

You should be pointing your finger at the owners here, imo.

Underwood was also here when we were the the team with most wins over a 5+ year steak. Hes the spokesman for the people pulling the strings.

Tommy wanted a winning franchise and showed that he was willing to shell out the $$$$ to make it happen.

The other partial owners looked at a spreadsheet and said wtf. They approached Tommy and he gave them the finger and bailed.

It cannot be proven but it makes sense. Then they run out and hire a guy that spent half of his life here and worked closely with Bud because they have no clue wtf they are doing

"Whatever you do echoes into eternity with player contracts. We just can't afford to take a step back, at least this early in the process."

Underwood sounds like he's writing for a soap opera on daytime TV. Take a nap, Grampy. Also, it's two weeks before camp, every other player in the draft is signed, and he thinks he's "early in the process?" Hoo boy...

The greatest advice I have ever received in my life was,

"The most pathetic thing a man could EVER do is worry about another mans money."

Yup. So I pretty much couldn't care less how this plays out.

You miss the bigger picture. He practically says he may cave later in the process.

Whiz "can you believe this **** lol. These guys sure did figure out how to make sure our names stayed in the media."

Mariota "thats not nice, but its funny. See you the first day at camp, coach"

I agree 100% with you. Look, I'm not bashing the Titan players, most fans, coaches, or employees. I don't want it to seem that way.

I'm positive that Amy Strunk is behind this latest Titan gaffe. Removing offset language for a #2 overall pick should be a no-brainer for a seasoned NFL guy like Underwood with a 21 year-old franchise QB, especially with the profile and monetary boost Mariota has already given the Titans this offeason. It's a bit sad he was sent out to make a "line in the sand" interview to a national media outlet, though. Like it or not, it's now a national story, and it's a distraction for the organization, along with Mariota. What is the purpose? Now, if the Titans back down, they will look weak, but if they don't, they may not have the guy they are basing their entire franchise around in uniform when the season starts. It all could have easily been avoided with competent leadership at the top.

You "duck" guys keep saying things like the Titans are "old world thinking in the new world". But my understanding is the new thinking is that teams are now demanding offset language. In the old world offset language wasn't necessary but these days it is. That is why only 2 first rounders don't have it. It would be interesting to know the stats on how many first rounders didn't have offset language last year and how many the year before. What is the trend? Is this really old world thinking by the Titans or is this where the league is going?
