A guy I really like that was left off your list is Jake Ryan out of Michigan. Ryan tore his ACL in 2013 so he was recovering but still put up 112 tackles with 14 tackles for loss. He's not great in pass coverage but he is a tough run stuffer with great football instincts and would really help us by giving us someone who could control his gap.

I'd guess that he is a 3rd or 4th round guy.

Haven't seen much on him, but i'll look em up. I really don't want a pass coverage LB, I want one who stars in run D.

Um, why would you spend a high 2nd rnd pick on an ILB that can't cover anyone (a guy whos only focus is being good against the run)? An explosivwe OLB who can affect the pass rush AND stuff his side in the run game is more important.

One of our biggest problems was defending the pass in our base defense. Part of that was coverage and part of that was pass rush. An ILB who can't cover isn't a great help. Give me Kendricks in round 3 or 4 or Anthony in rnd 5 (one of my sleepers) and save the bigger currency for the bigger impact players for our D.

    IMO.

The one trap we had better not fall into is improving places where we have adequate play and not addressing the GIANT holes we have. Improving ILB next to Williamson will mean nothing if we still have no pass rush and have holes on our OL so our offense remains the worst in the league which comes back and kills our D.

IMO, Kendricks is the best MLB in the draft though he doesn't have the requisite size and I'm thinking he may not have the best physical measureables. I also wouldn't take him until later if we only have a single 2nd rnd pick.

I think OLB (pass rusher), WR, OL, CB, DL, QB are much more important positions to consider in the first 2 rounds.

    Well allow me to retort.

I consider any 300 lb pounder that runs sideline to sideline and makes plays downfield a high motor player. I only attached one video, but all of his film looks like this. Maybe I should have said great effort player (potato/potatoe).
I also give this nod to any player that puts his team first and plays through injuries (see Stanford game).

The dumb penalties (I assume your referring to the excessive celebration penalty he received after registering his second sack in their bowl game) are a result of a young man excited that he made a play. I don't remember him stepping on any quarterback's leg or stomping on anyone's head. If I'm missing something please acknowledge the incident and I will gladly apologize.

Because of his versatility, their are occasions when he is lined up at the 5 or wide 9 that he gets singled up. But when he plays the 3, he is constantly double teamed. Even when double teamed he holds his ground and grabs dirt (trench lingo: creates a pile to close running lane). You can tell that he has been well coached.

Also, your comment about stats. I don't really know how to respond to that. Example: If your assignment is to occupy blockers so that your linebackers can make the play (you see where I'm going), you did your job. Your stats will be affected, but that doesn't make you less of a player. Ndamukong Suh, Haloti Ngata, Jurrell Casey don't have great stats every year, but their all great players.

I do agree that he is slow off the snap, but he still has the ability to collapse the pocket.

Hm.. He sure delays a while after the ball is snapped on most of those plays.

Just because he CAN do something doesn't mean he has the motor to do it all the time. High motor players fly to the ball and give great effort every play. I would agree he played a lot better in the Bowl game than some of his other games this season. Again, that shows you he doesn't go all out every play which to me equals NOT a high motor.

I have watched 8 of his games and watched him on every play. No, not all his film looks as good as Nebraska. You will find loaf plays if you watch him against Arizona for instance.

I give him credit for playing thru injuries but that has nothing to do with having a high motor. In addition, he wouldn't be making dumb penalties to hurt his team if he was so team oriented. Against Nebraska (the vid you posted), he had back to back 15 yard penalties on plays where he sacked the QB twice! That's dumb!

The dumb penalties are after wrapping up the QB, trying to plant him into the ground which is roughing the QB. Then, on the very next play, he sacks the QB again and taunted the opponents sideline. He wasn't just dancing around excited he made a play. And he's done it before. I believe in the UCLA he almost sacked Hundley ( he got it off) but after he knocked him down cleanly, stood over him and taunted him. Another 15 yards and first down for the opponent. And as I said, against nebraska alone he had 2 sacks more than nullified by 30yards of penalties. I would cut him some slack on the first one but taunting is dumb and only hurts the team.

I haven't seen him do that, but when you keep comitting taunting penalties...that's a me first attitude where I need to intimidate you. Not good.

I don't disagree that he has phenominal talent and that when he wants to, he's arguably the best player in college football. But while he is frequently doubled, he is not always doubled. And when singled he doesn't always win. I have seen him get turned and pancaked (against Arizona I think). Point being, he's a great player that SHOULD be much better. If he just fired off the ball 90% of the time instead of losing .5-1 second, he'd be making much more of an impact!

In Suh's last year in college, he had 12 sacks, 20+ tackles for loss, broke up 10 passes and blocked 3 kicks while helping his defense rank first in points allowed. In the Big 12 Champ game he had 12 tackles (7 for loss) and 4 1/2 sacks.

Leonard Williams is every bit as good as Suh and if he played with a higher motor (top effort on every play), his stats/effect would be similar. Just getting off the ball really late is a big problem and will be a bigger one in the NFL. But Suh developed a lot in his last year and hopefully LW can do the same his first NFL season with NFL coaching. His attitude and injuries are my only concern with him.

Take a look at Eric Kendricks (UCLA LB) play and you'll see what I mean by High Motor/High Effort kind of guy. He maximizes every ounce of his talent.

His Virginia game was impressive. After the first 5 tackles I looked down at the game clock thinking it had to be the 2ndQ, but he did all that in 2 minutes lol. Then does the same vs Colorado. Great effort guy.

i know we wont have a chance at him unless he falls tremendously or we trade back in the 1st/up from the second, but dante fowler is a guy that one should keep their eye on. dude is a high motored-straight up football player, he will be a force to be reckoned with for years barring injury
