Whisenhunt says he doesn’t need to bring in his own quarterback

Whether new Titans coach Ken Whisenhunt sticks with the starting quarterback he inherited, Jake Locker, remains to be seen. But Whisenhunt says speculation that he prefers to bring in his own quarterback is incorrect.

“To be honest, I haven’t really thought about it that way,” Whisenhunt said Thursday, via Jim Wyatt of the Tennessean. “I am excited about the little bit of time I have spent with Jake. He exhibits a lot of the qualities I like. He has been great in the meeting rooms, I like the way our exchanges have gone. So our focus is on that.”

Whisenhunt already did bring in one of his own quarterbacks in Charlie Whitehurst, who signed with Tennessee this year after playing under Whisenhunt in San Diego last year. But Whitehurst is a career backup who has looked bad in his few playing opportunities, so his presence doesn’t really put pressure on Locker.

If the Titans use the 11th pick in the draft to select a quarterback, however, that would put pressure on Locker. If Texas A&M’s Johnny Manziel, Central Florida’s Blake Bortles or Louisville’s Teddy Bridgewater is available at No. 11, the Titans may select the player they hope can succeed Locker.

But Whisenhunt sounds like he’s willing to give Locker this season to prove himself.

“It is a make-or-break year for a lot of guys in the league. Jake is one of the guys,” Whisenhunt said. “That is the nature of this business. He just happens to play a position that gets a lot of attention.”

Whisenhunt’s most important job is getting that position straightened out.

I never fully trust what I hear this close to the draft. I believe Whiz likes Jake, and will give him a chance to be our QB, but how could we not expect a QB with Jakes injury history and depth behind him.....

Thats why Im torn on wanting a top QB from this draft. Could be a wasted 1st pick if Locker makes it thru the year. Id like to tool the team with one more weapon to give Locker a better team to battle with...

And the Whitehurst signing was a sneaky way Whiz got to install his system. Coaches cant work with players on plays yet, but a player who knows the ins and outs of it can.

Would rather build a stout defensive and strong running game first before bringing in another young QB. What's the worst that can happen Locker get hurt, we suck, then get our choice of QB next year.

He's either your guy or he isn't their is no in between. Let's not pretend this draft class is full of studs at QB, it's all projects/potential. No one was talking about Bortles and Carr as first round prospects last year, but looking at 2015 its very promising. (Things could change though)

Can't really see us going QB at all in this draft. Lonewolf is right that 2015 looks better so consequently thats why Whitehurst is here to give Locker every chance of getting the playbook in his head and staying fit. I am sure that if Locker struggles or more probably gets injured then Whiz's Plan B is to give Whitehurst the keys because at least he knows the playbook.

Should the writing be on the wall for Locker at any stage this season then I would expect us to go best QB available in next years draft.

I think it makes the most sense to give Locker one more shot in a new system. If he fails, then you tank and get a high pick next year to use on a QB.
