I grew up playing soccer and swimming... then as I got older I was getting pretty serious with both and had to choose which I was going to dedicate my time to and swimming won out because I hated the soccer coach I had at the time.

I love the sport, but I don't really "follow" it like I probably should. I think it's more fun to play than watch, but I feel like that about most sports (can't stand to watch baseball). I keep up with what's going on with the US team and a few MLS clubs and every 4 years I get sucked into the World Cup.

As much as I hate to say it, if you want to get a feel for good soccer then watch Brazil. Bad teams make the game look chaotic, but teams like Brazil control the ball so well that you can really see the strategy play out (kinda like the MCM when you saw Dyson heading upfield as the wall formed in front of him). Just watch how they work the ball around - lots of nice one-touch passes instead of dinking around with the ball trying to get set up, and when they pass they tend to place the ball perfectly... just like what VY needs to do consistently.

I have to pull for Brazil outside of the US mostly because of my favorite player-

On a truthful note I feel as though the U.S. Team will not win the world cup until Landon Donovan is gone. He seems like a bit of a jerk, and at the same time he's done nothing special abroad, so I just think the guy is bad karma for us and not up to the level of talent we need we need to win this thing. He was non-existent yesterday. The defense was pathethic yesterday too and Donovan left guys umarked as well and if they play like that it's going to get ugly later on. Altidore is the most exciting player on the team, but he is a bit of a one trick poney with his strength and speed. So I think he's good enough, but a bit limited.

The team as a whole though, very supportive of each other. And there have been worse teams than us so far. But leaving England's best player unamrked. How does that happen. Just some shake your head moments. Especially on the first call where all the guy did was start walking and we left him alone for no apparent reason at all. I was really dissapointed in the defense.

I thought Ghana's agressive approach is fun to watch as they dribble right at you like Freddie Adu used to do, and it was very effective for one match. But they too were shaky on defense.

Tim Howard might make up for the weakness. He looked good.

ESPN, great job all the way around.

Rooting for USA, but if I look at it honestly, I thought they played poorly, and not because England is good, but because we were not as smart, not talented. Felt we were a step slow against what appeared a slow team too, but I will give them the benefit of the doubt as we have two more games against lesser teams to get some confidence and momentum.

Altidore is only 20. He's definitely the future of US soccer, and he already plays for a decent squad in the EPL.

The only problem with Donovan is how he shies away from top teams. He's a great player, I just don't think he knows it. When he's aggressive, he'll get many chances at goals, but many times he just kind of hangs out and doesn't do much but pass.
He's always lacked aggressiveness. It's his main problem.
