Ian McShane makes anything watchable. Even Kings.

Not compared to Shameless or Californication.

I've heard good stuff about Homeland too.

And yeah, I like The Office, Big Bang Theory, Peep Show, Workaholic, Community.

Homeland is pretty good. One of the better shows on TV atm.

Start with Deadwood. It's probably the best of the ones you listed, and also short enough where you can move on to the next series quickly. If Deadwood would have been allowed it's logical and true conclusion (ala Sopranos or The Wire), I truly believe it would have been the finest television ever produced. Ever.

Rome and Boardwalk Empire are about even in quality, but you can finish Rome in a weekend if you're dedicated. Both are kind of flawed for different reasons - some of Boardwalk's plots kind of meander and go nowhere, but it has a great ensemble cast for the most part, with Season Two being one of the best seasons of any show in the past five years or so. Rome sort of has the opposite problem - it's got a lightening quick pace that reaches a breakneck by the end because it had to wrap up a fairly complex and lengthy piece of history in about 3-4 episodes. The Pacific isn't bad, but I'd only rent it because it's not for everyone. If you're expecting Band of Brothers, alter your expectations. They are two different animals.

Shameless and Californication are meh to me - both started with a great spark because of their respective leads, then my interest dissipated quickly. Never see the rest, and actually
want to get into American Horror Story big time.
