And with the announcement that the Saints are switching to a 4-3, I can almost guarantee that Will Smith will be a cap casualty. He would be an interesting Free Agent addition, but would likely command similar money to Wimbley.

would you sign smith then if he was cut? and use wimbley as a situational player as that is what he is best at, awful at run support...would you use smith and use wimbley as a situational player?

    Summary
Our two starting DEs both played over 80% of snaps last season. That is way too much for them to be at their best. Morgan’s development this season was one of the few bright spot on the D-Line. He is a definite keeper as our starting strongside DE, but he too needs some more depth to allow him to rotate through and keep fresh. Wimbley was a disappointment. At times he looked great when he could pin his ears back and rush the passer, but overall he was not as productive as hoped and he was a clear liability in the run game. Keeping him on the roster and rotating him in on passing downs is a much better use of his talents. Either through the draft or Free Agency, we need a high calibre 3rd DE at least to give our two starters a good rotation.

would you want to pay a situation player that much money though? and he is undersized and a very big liability in the run support

I think Wimbley can be effective if he isn't on the field for much more than 60% of the snaps. When fresh, he can be a very disruptive pass rusher and earn that money. Less playing time could certainly = more sacks for him.

Ideally, you would have 3 DEs of starting caliber that you rotate through and Smith would certainly give you that. The problem is the investment is significant. I'm not sure I could swallow that pill with the gaping holes on the O-line and at Safety. If he could be had for under $4m per year, then it's an easy decision.

so what if we give smith 5-6 mil a year and levitre in FA and trade back in the draft to mid teens and pick up eric reid then trade up to late first and draft barret jones or floyd

From what I saw out of Wimbley, he can play every down, but he needs someone next to him to draw off the double teams he gets.

Pairing him with a good DT will make him stand out more.

I agree with JCB. Wimbley needs a bigger bodied DT who can pickup the doubles. Wimbley got a ton of pressure, just never finished. That bigger DT that could just touch the OT for a half second could give KW the extra boost he needs to get a sack.

Look at Aldon Smith. Dude is super overrated, he's good... but he only gets extreme sack #s because Justin Smith gets doubled or tripled every single play. I got nothing against Aldon, just saying he's average just thrives off a dominant Justin Smith.

This is why I'm praying we land Star.

A big DT will def help, but no depth is still no depth no matter who we got at DT. We have our starters, unless Werner drops to 10 we don't need a starting de...so draft one n rounds 2-4 for quality depth and maybe they'll turn into a solid pick but as long as they are good we are okay. IMO you need three starting caliber DEs and depth...kinda like CB. That's why they get paid so much.

OL>big DT>DE>SS>CB that's our priorities, but that doesn't correlate to which rounds we select them. Possibilities are endless

I probably haveour needs listed in a similar order. Not sure what we'll address through the draft and what will be filled through Free Agents.

Linemen ( on either side of the ball) seem to be where this draft class is deepest, so I wouldn't be shocked to see us pick up linemen with all our picks in the first 3 rounds.
