3 first rd picks. 2 in one year. Our last 1st rd pick to play on the o-line was Brad Hopkins who was drafted in 1993 and last played in 2005.

    LT Staley 28th pick 2007

LG Lupati 17th pick 2010 draft

    C Goodwin 5th rd pick

    RG Boone UFA

RT Anthony Davis 11th pick 2010 draft

Look at the 2010 draft. A draft that occurred before Jim Harbaugh was hired. A commitment was made and now it is paying off big time.

Of course in addition to the talent on the line there is an attitude that runs from Jim Harbaugh to Greg Roman to the line coach Mike Solari. So where is our attitude? Where is our commitment to our line? Seems like this year is the best time to do that.

I think you're preaching to the choir. I've seen roughly the same post (about all those 49ers draft picks) several times at this point.

Is there anyone around here who doesn't think the Titans are going O-line heavy in this coming draft? Because they are.

It isn't just the 49ers. As I pointed out in another thread 12 of the 20 starting OL in the championship games were drafted in the 1st or 2nd rnd.

5 of the 10 starting OL in the SB are 1st rnders with Oher and Mckinney from the ravens.

We are uncertain as to whether we have our franchise QB or coaching staff of the future. So investing in the OL is the only smart thing to do right now. Every coach and QB needs a good OL. If you invest in a DE this yr and Munch gets fired and the new coach wants to run a 3-4 maybe he doesn't have the personnel that he needs to run it. Solid OL picks fit with every coaches philosophy.

I really wouldn't be pissed if we went OL in the 1st and 2nd rnd.

If the 49ers can use an 11th pick and a 17th pick in 2010 to address the o-line then why is it so radical for us to use a 10th and 39th to do the same thing?

The Titans need to stop drafting projects in the mid to late rounds for the OL

I remember watching that draft thinking... what are the 49ers doing?!

Mostly because they took Iupati over Pouncey. Although Mike Iupati has looked just as impressive as Pouncey. You guys know who we took... Derrick Morgan.

And we can look at the Dolphins O line:

LT Jake Long (2008 first overall pick)

LG Richie Incognito (Rams 2005 third round pick. More off the field problem than you can shake a stick at but for some reason they do not get much attention)

C Mike Pouncey (2011 first round, 15th overall)

RG John Jerry (2010 third round)

RT Nate Garner (Jets 2008 seventh round)

I 100% agree with this.I can't wrap my head around the line of thinking that is obsessed with "value" above all else. If you have a need, see a guy you think can be a stud, and you have the ability to acquire him, you do it. I don't care what pick it is. Establishing an O-line is like going to the body in boxing. It may not look fancy but it'll pay off exponentially later. Worry about value in the later rounds. 1st round is for studs.

Drafting 2 offensive linemen with 2 of our first 3 picks not only responds to a current need it is an investment for the next 7 years.

The 49ers built their team through the draft before Harbaugh even got there and have gone from terrible to the super bowl in such a short time. So even if things don't work out with Locker and Munch gets fired the foundation for winning can still be there on the o-line and on our defense.

Just becuase you have a good OL, doesn't necessarily make you a good team. You also need a good coach, good QB, etc ... but the OL is the foundation to build that off of. But if you don't have a good OL,then the rest really won't matter.

Its like building a $10M dollar mansion on a crappy foundation ... whats the point when the house will just crumble anyway. Conversley, just because you have an amazing foundation doesn't mean you will have an awesome house. But you will never have that awesome mansion if you don't build a good foundation 1st.
