I was wondering if any members here are in law enforcement. I have a couple friends and a mentor encouraging me to apply for the police department. Perhaps moving to the state police or another agency after a couple of years. I am seriously considering going for it. Current career path is dragging me down. I've gone about as far as I'm going to without going back to school and I'm not even sure I want to do it anymore.

Any experiences? Current or former officers?

    Just curious.

I thought about it for a long time, I can probably answer some questions about the process. I can also direct you to a board where I go much information/stories if you like.

My cousin is a cop, well two of my cousins.. I did a job shadow with the oldest one when I was in high school, I also did another with a random cop just because it was entertaining. I wouldn't want to do it day in day out though. Most of the calls are domestic disputes, just watch Cops or do a ride along.

My dad is a Tennessee State Trooper now, he was a Florida State Trooper as well. Got a few cousins that are Deputies and Troopers. I used to volunteer at the Putnam County Sheriffs Department. My dad pushes hard for my brother and me to be Troopers we would be 3rd generation Troopers. One of my great grandfathers was the first and only Putnam County deputy to be killed in the line of duty. I've thought about it but haven't made up my mind yet. I also have a lot of offers when I got out of the military Chicago police and Norfolk Police really wanted me. What is it that you want to know?

I've heard some people say it is the greatest job ever. I've heard others day it is a nightmare.

I don't know. It looks extremely rewarding and interesting. The pay isn't all that great starting out but benefits are excellent and they'd pay for me to go get another degree. The turnover rate for officers in Montgomery is high. This is not a nice city.

I think I'll probably give it a shot.

Should still do a ride along with an officer. During both shifts.

my future bro-in-law is a cop near a major University. He has seen some insane things. Got a commendation of some sort when he knocked on a suspects door, as soon as the door opened, they pulled a gun on him. He was able to subdue the guy, luckily. He has seen more than a couple murders and suicides.

His dad (my soon-to-be Father in law) was a cop and asst. police chief for a lot of years, in a town an hour away from me, and he, in all his career, didn't see anything as crazy as his son has seen in a couple years on the force.

So.. it all depends on WHERE you are a cop.In a calm town, I'm sure it's easy to have a nice, long career.. in some places, you are stretched pretty thin.

I hear being a cop is good if you enjoy having nightmares.

Uh... if you're thinking about being a cop in Montgomery the obvious answer is "no".

Anywhere else, fine. Chicago? LA? NYC? Sure, have fun. Montgomery? No. No no no a million times no.

I'd rather be a fireman. But they still get their fair share of bloody brains and gore all over the roads.
