If it got Munch suspended like Payton then it'd be a blessing in disguise.

Eh only problem I would have is we would be under the scope if we brought in Williams. I like him for everything else, he could create some nasty blitzes with Brown/Ayers, he brings much needed attitude, and he's not Jerry Gray. Gray has been here two years now, if he's been holding back from his playbook then he's an idiot. If the players can't handle it that's on them, stop running the 4-3 zone every play and it wasn't until Palmer was gone that he finally gave in and blitzed more.

I'm not sure I understand this thread. You do realize Williams was the first to promote Gray to defensive coordinator? Gray oversaw some good defenses. It didn't happen overnight, but it did come to fruition. As this season wore on, I did notice a lot of improvement on the defensive gameplans. Yes, yes, we set an ugly record. In 2006, we had the worst ranked defense in the league. In 2007... I don't really see the defense as the biggest problem. I don't see Gray as the biggest problem. Would I be happy with an upgrade at DC? Sure. Gray is a Fisher/Williams underling. What says Williams comes in here, waves a magic wand and makes everything better?

What i mean by it is that it works against bad teams, maybe a better roster and the same thing would work against good teams

Except that 30 yards off the LOS BS he did against the Lions

I dont feel he got the best out of our defense. I dont think Gray completely sucks though, our talent level (or lack of) doesnt give us a lot of options. No pass rush, no safeties....

It's just a hypothetical "what-if", as the thread title states.

I did not know that. But I don't really see how that's relevant to the question.

Not sure where you got that from. I certainly didn't say it.

All I'm saying is I think he's clearly the superior coordinator. It only makes sense that a more talented coach = better results on the field. Whether or not you feel Williams is actually more talented than Gray is a matter of opinion I suppose.

    No.

He sucks... I wouldn't want him even if Bountygate had never come out. He turn around the Saints defense when they won the Super Bowl, but it sucked balls after that. He's the reason they lost to the Seahawks and 9ers in the playoffs the past couple seasons.

    Very overrated.

There's definitely undertones in your OP that suggest Williams would simply flip this defense around. The point about the Williams and Gray connection is that during Williams's stint as a head coach, Gray was the guy he trusted with his defense, and it payed dividends.

I'm for giving Gray another chance. He's doing the things you want a coach to do. He publicly called Griffin out for being soft. He benches players when they underperform. I don't always like the gameplan, but I do recognize that its to cover for the gap in talent that we have.

I would certainly be for an upgrade at DC. I just don't see Williams really doing anything different than Gray up to this point. They're cut from the same cloth. So far, Gray's defense looks like Williams's defenses, but with less talent. Williams has had struggles as well. He spent a season in Jacksonville. Del Rio took the defense over at midseason.

Still not sure what "undertones" you mean. It certainly wasn't my intention. The only thing I see in the OP that you could be referring to is when I said "Personally, I think he could do wonders for this soft pansy @$$ defense." And by that I didn't mean that we'll all of a sudden be a top 5 defense or something. I'm just saying I think Williams could get us headed in the right direction and give this defense a much-needed attitude boost. You may disagree. And that's fine.

I missed him calling out Griffin. What exactly did he say?

All excellent points. This is the kind of discussion I was wanting out the thread. I certainly wasn't trying to convince anyone that Gregg Williams is the savior we are looking for or anything. He wouldn't be my #1 choice. But I do consider him to be a better coordinator than Gray, and thus an upgrade. And considering there's a chance he'll be reinstated, combined with the fact that this organization LOVES hiring guys with Titan/Oiler ties, I figured it was worth discussing.

Yeah, that's what I was talking about with the undertones.

    Here's a link:

    http://blogs.tennessean.com/titans/2012/10/04/titans-d-c-jerry-gray-wants-his-defense-to-toughen-up/

He didn't name Griffin specifically, but it was all pretty much aimed at him. Griffin took it personally too. He defended his soft play to the media. :disappointed:

I'm glad you're getting what you want out of this discussion. I certainly don't consider Williams to be better than Gray at this point; nor do I consider Gray to be all that bad. I don't hold Williams in the same high regard as some others. He was a great defensive coach. Could be again. Same could be said about Gray.
