Here are a few snap-count tidbits of interest from the Titans’ 24-19 loss to Jacksonville on Sunday:

    • Outside linebacker Akeem Ayers was on the field for about 50 percent of the defensive snaps (34 of 64), which has been about the norm for the past month – ever since he was taken out of nickel-linebacker situations. During that time, Ayers has been used more in pass-rushing situations, evident by the three sacks he’s picked up over the past four games. He had one against Jacksonville and has four overall this season.
    • Middle linebacker Colin McCarthy was one of three Titans defenders – along with Michael Griffin and Jason McCourty – to play all 64 defensive snaps, but he didn’t make much of a statistical impact. According to game stats (coaches’ stats are sometimes different), McCarthy posted just two tackles, which is a career low for any game he’s started.
    • The Titans went almost exclusively with their four starters on the defensive line, as defensive end Kamerion Wimbley was in for 61 of 64 defensive snaps, defensive end Derrick Morgan was in for 60 snaps, and tackles Sen’Derrick Marks and Jurrell Casey both played 60 snaps. Rookie defensive tackle Mike Martin got just five snaps and defensive tackle Karl Klug got just three snaps – though Klug did pick up his first sack of the season on one of those three plays.
    • Rookie wide receiver Kendall Wright was on the field for just 39 of the Titans’ 71 offensive snaps, but he was a more popular target than Kenny Britt, who was on the field for 54 snaps. Jake Locker threw eight times to Wright, completing five for 48 yards. Locker targeted Britt five times, completing three for 25 yards and a touchdown.
    • Safety Robert Johnson had only been on the field for a combined five snaps in the Titans’ previous two games, but he got 25 snaps against Jacksonville. That’s because starter Jordan Babineaux was benched after Cecil Shorts’ long touchdown catch. Babineaux had been playing nearly every down in recent games, but was reduced to 40 of 64 snaps against the Jags.

Ayers has 3 sacks in 4 games, under that production he'd be a 15 sack guy. Is it time for him to just become a DE full-time, replacing Morgan?

    Colin had a rough game.

I don't understand why we dont rotate our DTs more. Both Mike Martin and Klug can play, but yet you let Marks/Casey play 60 of 64 snaps? Especially for big guys that's insane, needs to be a better rotation.

I'd like to see more of Kendall. But, it's hard to do. We love our 2TE sets, and CJ needs a FB in most of his runs. I wish we could work in more 3WR-1TE sets, but do we sacrafice Quinn which will likely hurt CJs production, or take out Stevens/Cook?

What we need to do is switch to a 3-4 front. All our best players on defense are LB's, so get them on the field together. Ayers and Wimbley as OLB's, Brown and McCarthy as MLB's.

Couldn't agree more JCB. Ayers is one of our (if not the) best defensive player, IMO. I believe that Marks, Martin, Casey could play 34 DE. We don't have a NT on the roster, unless we stick Casey there. Not sure how I feel about Morgan as a 34 DE.

So lets go NT with our first pick? Starr/Hankins.. both look good :)

You are exactly right. I've been trying to point this out for awhile. Funny thing is, we all know our front 4 is awful at generating pressure on a consistent basis... let alone getting sacks. I see posters constantly talking about drafting the best defensive end in the draft in hopes to cure our pass rushing ails. The thing is the answer is right in front of us, and it doesn't necessarily involve drafting a defensive end. Just switching to a 3-4 will generate more pass rush for us, and it utilizes our defensive team strength which is our LB corps. A change in scheme alone will net us 5-10 sacks a season with our current players. I mocked Manti to us to solidify the inside in a 3-4 giving us Ayers and Wimbley outside, with Manti and McCarthy inside... that is a sweet 3-4 set up right there and drafting a DE is not needed. I fear this organization is too blind to see what is right in front of their nose, so we'll probably draft a 4-3 DE and he'll be a Morgan clone. :anon:

-Ayers has stepped up significantly these past few weeks and is currently our best defensive player.

-I'm becoming less and less of a fan of McCarthy. I still like him but between his injury issues and poor play as of late, if we get a top 5 pick I want Te'o.

He's played great when on the field. This game was the only one where he didn't seem to make much of an impact. Top 5 picks are reserved for elite DLineman not LBs.

    Wow I disagree totally

Willis, Urlacher, Lewis and multiple others all would have been worth #1 overall picks.

i would love to see us have a 3-4 def also but we just dont have a NT maybe casey could be it but i dont think he's big enough but in the draft we need to draft a C or G imo

He'd actually be a 12 sack guy under that production.
