Wimbley would have loved the way we used our ends before Gray got here. Unless he has changed his mind the object was to get bigger, line up tighter and stop the run.

The old way when Washburn was here was ideal for a fast DE like Wimbley. It sure helped Babin's career. Under shifting the line would put the weakside end wider.

Correct me if I'm wrong but the Under 4-3 would put Wimbley wide in almost the 9 spot on the line with Ayers close to the line as the SAM backer.

Which to me honestly looks very similar to a 3-4 base formation IMO

Thats what I am thinking, I expect to see Wimbley stand up quite a bit throughout the season.

Babin cant line up in anything but the 9-technique, he cant play DE properly, Wimbley can.

No you would have a 5-2 look. Wimbley will be in a stance most of the time. You could have a 5-3 look if Babs is close up the line of scrimmage with is almost a bear 46.

Why are people so obsessed with this idea of us being a 3-4? And how does that jive with the drafting of Brown a classic 4-3 weakside type guy?

Having the line shifted to the weakside gives better protection to the will backer to run sideline to sideline. We did not draft Brown with the idea of him being a 3-4 ILB.

How do you know that? The last time we played the Raiders Stevens owned Wimbley who was playing the SAM linebacker spot on run downs. Now he will be lining up against 320 lb left tackles all day long as a DE.

I think that is a legit issue if Wimbley can be effective as an every down DE and be able to play the 7 spot. Are we going to be using a bigger guy there on 1st and 10.

Hopefully Wimbley pans out. So far in Gray's new scheme, our D line has been woefully ineffective. They don't stop the run, and have no numbers to back up that they are good pass rushers. They aren't. I would be OK if everyone on the 2011 D line but Casey and Klug were given walking papers

Granted Brown isn't a good fit for a 3-4 but the other elements are. We use a bigger DT as a nose (that is why we drafted Martin) and we use a bigger DE on the strong side (Morgan). The SLB just happens to be a guy who plays on the LOS and fits a perfect 3-4 OLB and the off side DE is a 250 pound guy who is also suited as an 3-4 OLB. With the exception of Wimbely putting his hand on the ground the alignment is very much like a 3-4. By the way, a true 3-4 plays OLBs on the LOS. So it is more of a 5-2 anyway. It is a 5 man front. I can't remember the last time Harrison or Woodley for the Steelers backed off the LOS and they also spend most of their time getting after the QB. Our alignment has many of the same options. We can bring Ayers and drop Wimbely if we want to mix things up. When we are in our base set we will probably see Ayers coming as a 5th rush guy as well; like a 3-4.

As far as drafting Brown it gets to the core purpose of the defense now days and that is to stop the pass and these athletic TEs. We can argue back and forth about the base set but we will end up being in a nickel or dime well over 50% of the defensive snaps. There is also a good chance when we go nickel we do more 9 technique with the DEs and have them lined up wide like we used to do.

As for the earlier comment about Babin by JC Babin would have been a very good fit in Wimbely's current role as the weak side DE (who is probably going to be playing wider even in the base set). Babin is actually bigger than Wimbely. Babin is 6'3, 267 pounds. The Titans were idiots for letting him go although he may have made that choice to follow Washburn. Looking at the 4-3 under and whatever alignments we would have used in nickel and dime Babin was a perfect fit. Anyone thinking Ball (6'5, 255) was a better option is nuts and we sure could have used Babin's 18 sacks. I'll assume Babin left for Philly because that is what he wanted to do and not because the coaches and front office were that moronic.

Mike Holmgren was so impressed by Wimbley he traded him for a 3rd rd pick. Wimbley was just 26 at the time and had 6.5 sacks the year before.

The raiders signed him to a 5 year $48M contract before last season and were so willing to get out of it after just one season they gave him $6.5M to just scram.

Human nature, not a shot at the character of Wimbley says he might not be motivated to play. In the last 16 months he has gotten almost $30M in bonuses! The SB from that $48M deal, the $6.5M buyout and the $9M SB for his new contract with us. I hope he is worth it.

I don't see Martin or Casey as a nose tackle type. Both these guys move very well and are well suited for the 4-3.
