Our defense will probably suck pretty bad unless we can get a few starters from the draft like last year. Who do we even have at DE right now other than Morgan?

You going to ignore the promise this young group gave us last season?

McCarthy, Klug, Casey, Ayers... then Verner and McCourty another year older...

We had the youngest D in the NFL if I remember correctly which makes me think they'll get better before getting worse.

Now if we draft like we did last year again. We're going to be just fine.

My point was this was going to happen regardless of Manning.

The key is to hit on the draft again and maybe pick up some cheap depth before training camp. Or go after JJ and Abraham if Manning is a Bronco.

I don't disagree that our defense needs work. It does. Clearly.

But I do think the following...

    1. Mario was never gonna happen, nor should it have
    2. Manning improving the O will help the D more than signing a bunch of second rate washed up scrub defenders would
    3. We are still in play for Abraham and Freeney
    4. Our defense was very young last season. It will improve.
    5. Part of the reason they sucked last year was they were on the field all damn game.

No. It is not. But you weren't going to fix it with this FA class.

Thats been my point for 2 days. Yet when I say it, people pull out the pom poms and use Manning as a fix all.

Difference is- Manning's impact will probably be MUCH more evident than 1 defensive free agent.

Especially if it were Not-so Super Mario Williams.

Will he fix all? No. Will he fix more than anyone else availiable? I think so.

I hope you are right, but I remember the Colts and what he did for their defense. It wasnt nearlly enough, except for the time the D stepped up for the team and brought them a super bowl. (Manning gets tons of credit for teh pats game)

Allright I'm going to explain this to you on each level:

DL: Obviously this is our biggest (IMO only) hole on our defense. However we have two spots locked up in Jurell Casey and Derrick Morgan. Casey played well last season and I think he is going to take a step forward and although Morgan only had 3 sacks in 2011 he had 14 QB pressures. Morgan torn his ACL in his rookie season. It takes two years for a player to come back from an ACL tear so anything we got out of Morgan last season was extra.

This is also what I want to address in the draft. If we take Mercilus in the first and then a guy like Brandon Thompson in the second we imeadently upgrade both other spots on our DL (really any one we drafted would be an upgrade over Jason "I can't get a sack to save my life" Jones and the 325 sack of potatos known as Shaun Smith.

LB: We have no holes at LB so I don't know why people keep saying this. We have all three of our starters in Ayer, McCarthy, and Witherspoon. Ayers and McCarthy should improve with their first full offseason and Witherspoon is a decent starting OLB. A draft pick can be added here for depth but that's about it. We will need to draft 'Spoons replacement in 2013.

DB: CB was the deepest position on our team so losing Finny (while it sucks) isn't going to kill us. McCorty was a beast last season and Verner is a ballhawk. Chris Hawkins showed a lot of flashes last season (vs the Saints) and I really think we got something special in Tommy Campbell. Once again we can add depth with a draft pick.

We also have two starting Safeties in Griffin and Babineux. Campbell played S in college so that's another person on the depth chart right there.

You have to remember that with McCarthy in the line up we had the youngest defense in the NFL. We were not as bad as some of you make us out to be. Coming off the lock out we saw a lot of kids develop and experience growing pains on the field. I'm not saying we will be a top 10 defense but we have the potential to get into the upper half of the league.
