I'll make a great argument for the naysayers.

No QB in NFL history has won Superbowls for multiple teams.

Yeah, Manning is great at avoiding sacks... when he knows he has 5 seconds per play to get the ball off.

I hate that ESPN nonsense. The guy knew he wasn't ever in danger of being hit. Put him behind a bad offensive line and happy-feet would get destroyed.

    To play devil's advocate...

    Manning didn't WIN sh**.

He did wear the jersey though.

I kind of agree. I mean, they wouldn't have had the chance if it wasn't for Manning, but the year they did win the Superbowl it was more about great D and running.

My argument was that Manning is a poor mentor and would be damaging to Locker. One piece of evidence I cited to support my argument is that the Colts never produced a backup QB worth anything.

It's possible the reason for that is that all the backups the Colts ever had were crap from day one and never would have amounted to anything even with the best mentor in the world.

However, you still haven't done anything to disprove my argument that the presence of Manning would probably be a bad thing for Jake Locker.

If you want to address my actual argument, please do.

Yep. Until they started killing the Bears on the ground, Manning looked like he was locked in on choking once again.

    So...

who are the great backups in Seattle that Hasselbeck mentored?

Did anyone even read my original posts? That is one small piece of the argument. It is evidence that a quarterback is a good mentor, not proof of it.

We know for sure that Hasselbeck is friendly with Locker and wants to teach him things. That is far more than can be said about Manning in Indianapolis, if all the rumors are to be believed. It is well known around the league that Manning did not allow his backups to take practice reps (he took them all) and wasn't particularly interested in being friendly with them or teaching them anything.

It's not unusual for starting quarterbacks to not be the best of friends with their backups. It's not to say that Manning is a terrible person. He is just such a competitor that he isn't really interested in helping a guy take his job away from him.

Well I don't think Peyton would be a "bad" mentor in the sense of mentoring. I'm sure any QB can learn from the preparation that Peyton puts in.

But I also agree that Locker isn't going to benefit a lot from Peyton, because no other QB can run the system the way Peyton does.

Biggest issue is that it doesn't matter. You don't not sign Manning because of Locker (unless you are going to argue that you would also not sign Brady, Brees, etc)

The scenarios play out like this:

Manning is too hurt to actually play and we've wasted some cap money and Locker takes over in 2013.

Manning does well but will only play for a few seasons and Locker takes over in 2014 or 2015.

Manning does well and will play for 5 years. Worst case we lose Locker and it's another wasted first round pick where we get nothing for it OR best case Locker gets a lot of mop up duty and other teams want to trade for him a la Kevin Kolb or Matt Flynn.
