I would have to agree with DW. Finny is a rare type. Maybe a once a decade type because of his drive overcame talent.... That's not very normal.

Now the thing with him being the be all end all of our titans.... Eh... I'd like to keep him around but I would also like to see proper assembly of contracts for our future stars. So it's all about turn over and what talents we will end up paying eventually anyways over one finny or one CJ...

I think the CJ contract is the essence of getting burned on a big contract.
Not saying finny is the next one in that package but his contract would constrict us.

There is a big difference between "one in a decade" personalities and "once in a decade" talents. Finnegan is not a rare talent. It would be easier to replace him that people think. I would love to see Finnegan stay, but the team can survive without him.

Also, I think the leadership concern is overblown. The next generation of Titans leaders has arrived and they are named Jake Locker and Colin McCarthy. I am ready to see the torch get passed to those guys.

Finny is getting tagged and they know it. If he doesn't want to play under the tag then he will sign the Titans best offer. It is that simple. Finny has no leverage at all.

When you have 30mil in cap space you don't let your best CB and defensive leader walk for nothing.

I am perfectly fine paying Finny 10mil for next yr. We have very little money dedicated to the CB position at this point and so it won't cripple us to do it.

He's only had 1 season where he didn't perform extremely well, and that was last year when he was switching sides and wasn't comfortable.

    Here's a question...

With CJ- he was easily replaceable, yet we still overpaid. Who would you replace Finnegan with?... I can't think of anyone in the league.

So a 2nd year player is going to just step in and take Finnegan's leadership role?

    I highly doubt it.

He was the pulse for our defense. Without him, I'd hate to see what we would have been.

    Ok then...

Name the last player the Titans had like Finnegan.

    I'll do it for you:

    Blaine Bishop.

    He retired in 02.

    That was a decade ago.

I have always felt that leadership is a vague concept that is way overrated. Coaches are leaders. Young players can be leaders. You don't need veterans for a team to have a direction. The players are professionals and they know what's asked of them. It's not like Cortland Finnegan is the difference between the defense being good or bad.

As for replacing him, there are guys out there. There are a bunch of decent free agent cornerbacks. Or you draft a cornerback. It might be a tough transition, but it wouldn't be that bad.

Since they write contracts, most agents are lawyers.

Don't you think he will come at about the same price as Finny?

I would think so. I'll take the guy that has proven to be a leader on the field and a solid citizen off the field and who understands our system.

Their is no need to look at other top tier CBs because they are all going to get about the same money. That is why I brought up Browner in a thread. I would certainly think he will come cheaper because he isn't as proven, but he has some upside as well.

The Titans hold all the cards and Finny knows it. The new CBA rules make it prohibitively expensive to hold out. Finny will get the tag and then it will be up to his agent to orchestrate a sign and trade deal that the Titans are comfortable with or he will have to take the Titans best offer or play under the tag. I have no concern about a decrease in production if Finny plays under the tag because he knows he can't have a drop off or his value will go down when he hits the market next yr.
