Agreed. I see Mario going after a Julius Peppers type of contract when he hits the open market:

6 years $91.5 million with $42 million guaranteed. Peppers could make $40.5 million over the first three years. The number could increase if he makes the Pro Bowl, records a certain number of sacks or is defensive player of the year.

But as I said in a different thread, ask any Bears fan/Bears staff/Bears player and none of them will regret giving Julius that type of money.

If Mario is signed by us, it's likely Finnegan is gone and we will not get another HUGE FA. Our best bet would be to go after Mario and sign Scott Wells (centers are normally >4M for elite talent). Then resign Babs & JJ. In the draft go after a CB 1st (Claiborne, Kirkpatrick, or Jenkins), DL/OG/S in the follow rounds.

This would be the year for us to do something like that. Overall our defense is very young, and cheap. Adding an expensive veteran is something we could take on this year.

BUT when those guys got paid, they weren't coming off season ending injuries. That's going to be GM's negotiating point when talking with Mario.

He may be every bit as good as Haynesworth and Peppers maybe even better, but I don't expect his next deal to exceed those 2 guys. They both did big things the year before signing those huge contracts.

I wouldn't mind paying Mario that kind of money if it was an incentive laden contract where he gets less if he gets hurt again. I doubt he or his agent would go for that, but I think we'd all be more comfortable with it (that might even be against the CBA to put that in there).

JC makes a good point. Who on our defense is highly paid right now? I doubt the highest paid player makes more that $4 per year (but I don't have the numbers in front of me). Like everything in life, you get what you pay for. If Bud and the FO want to keep the defense on the cheap, we're going to look like a team that didn't spend much on defense.

It's not like Williams tore his knee up or something. He tore a pectoral muscle, a relatively easy injury to return from.

I'm sure some GMs will try to use it as a negotiating tactic, but he will have enough suitors that it won't drive his pricetag down.

I think people around here are grasping at straws and trying to convince themselves that the Titans have a shot at signing him.

Our highest paid defenders for 2012

    Will Witherspoon $3.5M
    Derrick Morgan $2.87M
    Shaun Smith $1.33M
    Akeem Ayers $1.12M

those are the only players on defense we have who make over a million.

DE Marques Douglas is due $1.25 but I can't see us keeping him for that amount.

Where are you getting those numbers from? I don't see how that McCarthy number is possible.

That's a good question, IDK why I posted Colin McCarthy making that. I'm editing it thou, cause it's clearly wrong.

$3.5 Million for WW as our highest paid defensive player is not bad at all. I don't think he can give us much so it might not be a bad idea to cut him and upgrade his spot through FA or early in the draft depending on who falls to us.

Ayers and McCarthy have turned out to be solid young contributors and it'd be nice to snag us another one.
