So, I believe you're a big fan of Terrence Malik, and in an earlier thread, I mentioned how boring The Thin Red Line was and how I couldn't get through it.

Well, I gave it another chance the other day and it's one of the best recent movies I've seen. I absolutely loved it. I'm pretty sure when I watched it the first time, it just wasn't the right time and mood. It's one of those movies you should watch alone, unless it's with a movie buff, and when you're wide awake.

The movie is pretty much one big montage of voiceovers of quotes and letters from soldiers. And I thought it was all delivered exceptionally well and it was very moving, convincing and inspiring.

The cinematography and soundtrack were both great, as even throughout the movie, you feel like you're sitting through photography class, the editing and images give quite a polarizing effect rather than feeling too campy. Sean Penn and Jim Caviezel both had very memorable performances. I found myself replying their banters in my head after the movie.

I feel the same about The Tree of Life.

After walking out... I was a mix of both bored and impressed. After thinking about it more and talking to my friend, who saw it with me, we both agreed it was very well done and we LOVED the imagery, editing and acting.

It took me years to appreciate any film of his. It's a great experience to come around to a wonderful film like The Thin Red Line. I think its the finest war movie ever made. It's better than the sentimental/exploitive crap that is Saving Private Ryan.

I have never seen a movie that is more mood-dependent than The Thin Red Line. I've watched it probably 2-3 times and both loved it and absolutely hated it.

:wink2: Take some "prescriptions" and watch Tree of Life :wink2:

If it's not your thing, it's not your thing...but I do believe we are both horror enthusiasts, so there is still some solidarity there.

Speaking of horror, I got a treasure trove of big full color Hammer Studios hardbacks for Christmas - four different books. Great great stuff..

Saving Private Ryan is far from crap. Two completely different directions and both films did a great job of what they were aiming for.

Thin Red Line was a philosophical look at war, nature and humanity, while Saving Private Ryan was a gritty, in-your-face look at the brutal honesty of war.

One was poetic and the other was realistic. That opening scene on Normandy Beach took movie viewers by storm and is probably the most heart racing opening scene you'll ever see.

As for The Thin Red Line, this was done by a fan, but it's so good, I wish it was in the movie.
