Why because I have read about the subject and refuse to allow something like this to happen?

You come off as a spineless pawn.

No, because you believe with certainty how you would act in a situation in which you know only what you've "read about". That is what most self righteous folks do.

If it takes being a "spineless pawn" to acknowledge that an otherwise seemingly honorable (now dead) man may have a regret then I don't mind being labelled as such. We spineless recognize that we don't hold the keys to all truths like the self righteous claim they do.

Whatever man go about and shove words down everyones throat. If you live with that kind of uncertainty in your life thats fine, not everyone else does. What JoePa and Penn St did were the act of cowards, that is all. Nothing legendary about it.

Aside from Joe Pa? Nope! Lots of people claim they know, but they don't.

Officially, there may have been rumors (accusations that never went anywhere) and a graduate assistant reported seeing something to Joe Pa.

If most people's talk is to be believed, then apparently if someone tells them they saw something then that is enough for them to go on a one-man crusade to get to the bottom of it.

Really, I'd say most of the blame about "calling the authorities" lies with the guy who originally saw it. It was really his responsibility to call the police, not the football coach.

Whatever yourself. I don't do either thing you suggest. Also, I don't assume to know how others live their lives and I have the decency to give thoughtful consideration to individuals before I make a judgement - especially those that have died. You would be well served to do the same.

You are too quick to call Joe Paterno a coward. And many like yourself seem to disregard that at this point the impetus of the "investigation" remains ALLEGATIONS. The alleged acts are horrendous. Jerry Sandusky is the accused, not Joe Paterno. Paterno did not break laws and we don't even know if he failed in any moral obligations to do more. Paterno was a head coach, not the campus police. He forwarded the information to his superiors to handle the situation according to company policy. His only error IMO, was trusting the investigation was handled in an accurate and thorough manner.

My impression of Joe Paterno is that he will always wish he had "done more" in EVERY facet of his life. That is the type of person he appeared to be. I don't believe he knew the full extent of the allegations that we all know that others have come forward. He was of a different generation.

You just did fool! Did you forget the name calling that started all of this? Just because the man died does not give him a pass.

Thats fine, we made our points. We both took it alittle too far, neither one of us is going to sway the other.

I've tried to stay out of this, but the way this has gone down with the media is probably one of the worst things I've witnessed in my life.

First, I think a lot of people overestimated JoePa's pull on campus. Administration and the BoT didn't like him and he had a constant power struggle with them for the last 2 decades at the job. The man that sometimes struggled to get use of his own indoor practice facilities was expected to be able to do the job of the BoT and the police on a whim. That isn't realistic.

Secondly, Mike McQueary testified that he was fairly certain of what he heard happening, but he didn't see ANYTHING. He then went to JoePa and told him even less. Everyone but JoePa mishandled this terribly and he was the one that got fired.

Thirdly, this story was out for a few days and no one really cared and JoePa was just a footnote until the New York Times decided to go after him and threw around monster bonuses to the people that could make it happen. The other major outlets followed suit. If millions of dollars hadn't changed hands, this would be a story about a man that did a terrible thing and JoePa would be a footnote.

I love how everyone hangs him saying that he wished he'd done more over his head as if that means he knew he should have done more at the time.

We all wish we would have done more on a million different things... doesn't mean we knew that then.

It's refreshing to see that not all the world wants to make Paterno a pariah. Thanks steverife and DW for thinking a little deeper than most.

Fool? Really? Name calling? Really? I said "you come off as a self righteous prig"- not you are one. Granted the difference is subtle, but not indiscernable if you think a bit before your formulate your opinion/response.

We did make our points. No offense intended, none taken. I'll agree to disagree.
