He was fine until this happened though.

Then all of a sudden he got cancer. Now this.

He would have lived to be 200 years old otherwise.

Well you don't just all of a sudden get cancer, they just hadn't released it to the public yet.

I am sure the added stress has not helped his recovery though.

Officially dead from lung cancer....IMO he died (this soon) from retiring and from how it went down (lost alot of his will to live I am guessing).

What happened at PSU is unforgiveable, and Paterno definitely had some culpability in that, but at this point I choose to remember him in totality of his career in football.

    RIP Joe Pa....

Heard the news a little while ago. Was kinda surprised to be honest. I mean I knew he was real old, but to me this guy is just suppose to be around.

JoePa was of the generation that believed in being a team player, a company man. He did what he thought was appropriate when he heard the news about a member of his staff. He informed his superiors.

There were MANY that were actually liable for the alleged actions of Sandusky- and it stopped with the Board of Trustees who elected to disregard the information that Paterno provided. Paterno's option would have been to "go renegade" and inform the media and/or authorities himself. And what was he supposed to do? Conduct the investigation himself? He turned it over to the "professionals" who are supposed to handle personnel issues.

What I find rotten about this whole story is that there were/are MANY outside of Paterno that could have informed the non collegiate authorities themselves. The victims, the victims family, the players, school administrators, and the Board of Trustees. But the juicy story is to go after "the legend". To pin culpability on JoePa and assert that HE should have done more than to inform his superiors.

He is of the generation that believed resolving your own problems- stoicism at its best. It's what made him the great coach he was. But this generation of media doesn't understand that and certainly doesn't respect it. Laying the problem on JoePa sells more and advances one's career more than focusing on Sandusky and the Board of Trustees.

Nobody will convince me that it is was coincidence that JoePa died shortly after the media blew him up on this issue. He lost his will to live IMO. This is the same guy that got blown up on the sideline with a broken leg and came back to coach in a cast. He was tough.

And what is worse, is that the Board of Trustees who are ultimately responsible, blew him up and fired him. EVEN worse than that- these remain allegations and haven't been proven. But that didn't stop the Board from firing him.

Child predation IS a serious crime and should be addressed aggressively. But it is unfair to any individual to be have their reputation destroyed whose only alleged crime was "not doing more". Why is JoePa any more guilty than any other member of Penn State's administration. It is what is wrong with America.

Rest in peace JoePa. There are many that understand you broke no laws and you believed that forwarding the information you received to your superiors was the correct thing to do. I have never been a Penn State fan but I respected the way you ran the program. Now I realize that I really respected you and the way you supported your program. I can't say I respect Penn State when they so quickly allowed you to become the focus of this horrible story. Shame on you Penn State.

I agree with about 95% of this, but I stop short of saying that Paterno was blameless in the scandal. Yes, he did what he was supposed to, BUT, in reality he owned that campus, and could have easily done much more.

I think he even knew this (as evidenced by some of his statements, I guess now from his deathbed). He was not criminally responsible (wholly or partially) for this, but he was not blameless here IMO.

That said, I think that history will be kind to him overall. He made a mistake towards the end of his career, but that just shows that he was human IMO.

His only blame is that he was the most famous. He DID take appropriate action. We SHOULD be hearing the names of the Board of Trustees that elected to squash this information when they were presented with it. But they decided to serve up JoePa and to eaily rid themselves of the most powerful personality on the campus.
