    Hawaii's recruiting is different, guys.

You can't just be any prospect and go to Hawaii. There are a lot of little "connections" you have to have to Hawaii. Or else, yeah- they'd have every great player.

Something about how you have to have family in Hawaii?... bunch of weird regulations there.

Never heard of that. Mostly it's just friggin expensive and nobody wants to be a looooong plane ride away from their families. For most people, Hawaii is just a place that they visit once for a week and then spend the rest of their lives talking about out; it's not a place to live or a place to send your SEC-bound linebacker prospect to compete in the WAC.

Don't think I'd ever live there. There biggest island is much smaller than Ohio. I like to travel a bit and I'd feel trapped just being there. Plus everything's so expensive.

I spent 10 or so hours in Hawaii during a long layover. Locked the bags in an airport locker and me and my wife took a city bus to Wikiki Beach, however its spelled, too watch the Japanese frolic in the surf. Lots of military enjoying the late afternoon beach as well. There was a crazy dude pacing back and forth on the bus mumbling too himself. I made my wife sit next too the window so I could go all kamikaze on him if need be.

    Done with story. Carry on

Funny thing about that: I feared that I might get 'rock fever' also, but after a while I got used to the size of it and don't want to live on anything bigger. I had heard that many natives were fearful of travel to the mainland because they couldn't comprehend a land mass that big, and I'm starting to understand that feeling. My job allows me to travel to the other islands and forces me to live in the grandeur of four-star luxury (yeah, sucks, I know) but I am JOYFUL!! when that plane lands back on Maui!

As for the expense, it's really just sticker shock. After a while you learn how to live within your means and the free stuff more than makes up for it. When you've been here long enough that you're not treated like malihini (a tourist) and are accepted by the locals you get a lot of help from them and their families.

However- because it's so remote- there's a lot that you have to just live without, and I realize- and HOPE- that island living isn't for everyone. But I never thought back in my angry drinking days when I would angrily wish to be "away from all these idiots and just live on a rock in the middle of the ocean!" that it would actually happen and be the best thing to ever happen to me.
