Where is the morality in it?
Do you not see what these institutions and the NCAA are doing or are you afraid of what could happen to America's minor league NFL?
How is it immoral to accept what you deserve?

Lol the boosters are not saints. The universities protect them because they are stuffing their pockets along with the players. The boosters are the bad guys under the current backwards system. If there wasn't any danger of your beloved program getting nailed by the NCAA would anyone truly have a problem with players receiving extra benefits?

The major programs need to break away from the NCAA and become the self sustaining professional sports entities that many of them already are. You can still use the university brand and implement a salary/scholarship system.

The immoral thing is what happens to the kids who put their bodies on the line every week for the entertainment of others. They are not given even a small percentage of what they produce while everyone else continues to laugh all the way to the bank.

    That is immoral.

So, are you going to pay all student athletes who's sport produces revenue for their respective university? What about students who's academic achievements produce revenue for their university? Or, are you just going to focus on football?

The reason it is a violation of rules and morally corrupt to accept unauthorized benefits is because these students are already getting compensated for their contributions to the university in the form of scholarships, food, clothing, books, weekly stipends, etc. Taking money or gifts from boosters is equal to accepting bribes which is ethically wrong in every business.

And, LOL at "kids who put their bodies on the line every week for the entertainment of others." Last time I checked, college football was voluntary.

Technically, yes. A lot of the kids Miami recruits come from horrible parts of South Florida. If I were in that situation and was given the opportunity to play football and get a degree for "free" from a good school, I'd take it.

With that said, even if you take into account all of the money the guys who don't go on to play in the NFL make throughout their lifetime and the full amount the scholarship costs for four years, it's not close to what the school makes from ticket sales, TV money, concessions, merchandise and the NCAA Football video game.

There's no way to stop illegal recruiting. There's no way to stop boosters. The only way this stops is when the players stop taking money, and that will never happen.

I know if I was in position to get extra benefits from a booster, I'd take every cent I could.

Right now the issue is football. Basketball would be the only other sport you could make an arguement for. I don't see 80,000 fans showing up to watch pole vaulting or tennis.

The other sports outside of football do not bring in multi million dollar TV and endorsement deals.
Kids are not walking down the street wearing the jersey of their favorite collegiate woman's soccer player.

I wouldn't "LOL" at these kids going out and putting their bodies on the line for the entertainment of others.
Many of them end up suffering later because of injuries sustained in college.
I'm sure there have been many students who had dreams of playing professional football and had those dreams cut short in college. The university still makes their money off that player and sure they hopefully still finish their education.

Wow not sure where too start and am even, for once, hesitant too - lol

    But here goes.

I agree that colleges should either have student-athletes or NFL/NBA and now MLB minor leagues (and too a small degree NHL). I for one would like it if there was true student-athletics at the universitiy level. Let the NFL/NBA (already doing it to a degree)/MLB (definatly doing it) & NHL run their own minor league systems. I for one would be all for this arrangment in the NFL. But I am totally against 'officially' corrupting collegiate athletics in the manner TXO suggests. It would be real easy for the NFL to set up a minor league system and let the rock heads who have zero desire too go too college sign minor league NFL contracts. I would watch the NFL minor leagues, would be particularly interested in the Birmingham Titans - lol

I think it would improve the college game as well.

    just my opinion

Why is paying the students or at least presenting them with an option corrupting collegiate athletics?

The system is already corrupt beyond belief.

I still do not see why these athletes can not get a share of the fortunes they are creating for other people.

Some of you act like college football is this sacred cow. Why can it not evolve and change? How does paying the athletes ruin the sanctity of college football?
To think they are all amateurs even now is extremely naive. These athletic departments are businesses. The NCAA is a business. Everyone is in this for the money and they are all getting paid.... except for the group of people actually producing the product.

I like your idea about a NFL minor league for kids who want to get paid but are not ready for the pros.
The thing is that could be even worse for the college game. You are going to take the majority of the top talent out of the NCAA? I know I don't want to see that. Also I don't see the NFL creating a minor league when clearly already have one with the NCAA.

I think we can all agree there are no easy solutions but something has to change. The greed and corruption are just out of control.

Don't even get me started on the BCS.

Again I have to ask. If it wasn't for the NCAA dropping the hammer on your beloved university would you care if players received extra benefits?

they are getting their share, in the form of a 100% scholarship with room/board, book and fees - PLUS!

Its the oppertunity of a lifetime.

and I think the college game, football in particular, would be improved with all the rockheads busting each other up in Birmingham and Omaha.

I partially agree with this...MLB has both feed ins from NCAA baseball and minor league baseball....it could work here as well. That said, the NCAA would fight this tooth and nail since it would provide stiff competition for their product and would likely take away their best talent. Also, I do not see this making the problem better unless the NCAA TRULY embraces the concept of amateur athletics, and cracks down on this behavior in the appropriate manner (which will happen sometime in the ....uh....well it will not happen).

Also, right now the only difference between the U and pretty much any other elite franchise from the SEC, Big Ten, Pac Ten, or other major conference is that the other teams have yet to have one of their boosters get arrested and find religion in jail. That is all....this goes on EVERYWHERE.

Another item to ponder....IMO when we pay near NFL level prices for game day tickets, pay NFL level prices for team gear and trinkets, etc...we are contributing to this problem. When we pay extra money to get the Big Ten network, or the Texas network, we are contributing to the problem.

That much money in play, and the pressure to maintain status in order to keep this revenue coming in, is the source of this.

I am sympathetic to the view that the people generating revenue (players) should be paid, but where does that end? Do people playing college sports that do not generate revenue (some may actually cost the university to continue) actually pay for the ability to play? Do they forego their scholarships since their sports do not generate revenue?

All told, this is a very complicated issue. For now I think that we, as fans, should always push for the appropriate penalty for the offending party, regardless of what our team loyalties are. That could help make a difference as well here.

If it hasn't been mentioned, I believe student athletes are not allowed to hold jobs. That is part of the problem and I'm not sure why that rule exist.
