Yes it's meaningless. Usually the guys who put up the stats are the 3rd stringers going up against other 3rd stringers. The Lions went 4-0 in pre season the year they went 0-16 or whatever it was.

Victor Cruz had 15 catches for 297 yards and 4 TD's. What did he do in the regular season? Nothing.

Stats in college are nice especially when the draft rolls around but that doesn't exactly translate into NFL success. If that was the case Colt Brennan and Ryan Moats would be starters in the NFL right now.

As usual you miss the point. The point (and it has nothing to do with his race) was a player not expected to be worth a pot of beans turned out to be a great player. There is no reason to pre-judge a guy because he played at a small school (especially if he is a WR), happens to be a good return guy (like that means he can't play WR) or even because of the color of his skin (I remember posts last year questioning his speed and talking about how he might give us decent field position but wouldn't have the speed to break off long TDs).

As I've noted, so far he looks like he could be a servicable WR or more in this league but we can't really label him at this point. I'm sure we could have given up on Mason (a black guy I used in my comparison who WAS a return guy) as a WR based on three years of doing nothing as a WR.

Now go and take your meds and calm down.

I did the same thing. I have used examples of guys who had great preseasons and then amounted to nothing. It just goes in one ear and out the other.

Anything we get from Mariani as a Wr is gravy.

No you miss the point completely! I never said a damn thing about him being from a small school and this is not about every player in nfl history who came into the league with low expectations.

Your comments about Steve Largent had nothing to do with anything i said. they did not contradict anything i said.

It's amazing how logical common sense skepticism is such a threat to some people.

Donald Driver was a 7th rd pick from a small school, Alcorn State, and he had a great career as a WR.

That is 2 examples i have given now of guys from similar situations to Mariani who have done well but nobody likes my examples. Why?

Now what is next a lecture about Don Hutson or Jack Snow? Snow, now that is a white name!

Notice how i make my points with examples? talking about great slot receivers and their physical characteristics i give examples. 7th rd picks from small schools who had good careers? I gave examples. Guys with great preseason stats who are really not great? I gave examples.
