From my understanding, Sony forced Raimi's hand on what to include in Spiderman 3. So it wasn't all his fault.

I watched the 1982 The Thing last night based on the recommendations in this thread. Great movie. Thanks for the heads up.

I liked the original 1950's The Thing and I liked the 1982 Remake The Thing but this looks terrible.

This looks like a well put together trailer... but the elements in the trailer look poorly put together. I'll give this a shot for a first time director, but the way the opening scene in the trailer is cut together reminds me of every contemporary teen-pleasing Hollywood horror flick.

I don't think there is anything in the trailer, personally, that makes me think it's going to be terrible. It looks like it'll probably be a film that had problems like the recent Predators - clearly, it get's what makes the original a work of art, but it tries to closely mimic and over-exalt the techniques rather than being wholly original and branching out.

I recently read the script to the prequel, and it only furthered the above idea. There's a re-creation of the "blood test" from the original, and yeah it's actually clever, but it encapsulates the problem I mentioned - we've simply seen this already. There are some cool ideas floated around in the draft I read, and if it's implemented well (i.e. don't go ape poopy with the CGI), it will be enjoyable on some level.

I'm more frustrated that they don't just make something more fresh, but this is also a business that is making $200 million films about Hasbro board games and re-making super hero flicks that haven't even been out a decade. That's a rant for another day though.

:ha:Why do people keep calling the 1982 film the original?

    It's a remake.
Oh and Predators was awful. Snoozefest.

Really, there's no need to be snarky. Clearly this "prequel" is related solely to the Carpenter film, hence why myself and others call it the "original". Carpenter's The Thing and the 1951 version are extremely distinct films, in plot, themes, and style - really, the only thing they share is the source material, and even then they're extremely different in almost every aspect.
