He's gonna get a big new deal and he will deserve it. Everyone saying he's lost a step or that he's not actually that good is seeing something that just isn't there. He's elite. You don't win in the NFL by letting your best players get away.

First of all I think CJ is one of the best players in all of football. He is a stud. People who can't see that are clueless. Not only is he real good he is HOF good if he can play for a number of years at a high level. CJ has done as much or more in his few years in the league as any RBs in the history of the game. In other words, how good does the kid have to be to impress guys like Duece? He wasn't 100% last year and the offense didn't exactly click on all cylinders for a number of reasons but he still was one of the best RBs in the league and broke as many tackles as anyone.

The only question is how much is he worth as one of the best players at RB. IMO it is all about the value of RBs in the NFL right now and that takes some money out of the equation.

Now assuming we do make a deal what is a fair deal for CJ? Again, teams aren't brain dead and going to hand over any franchise level players for him. But even if a team was willing to make a stupid deal who would we want? Who out there is a guy or group of guys that are really going to change the Titans future?

Obviously the only thing that makes sense is to get a bunch of draft picks for him. Still, we have a rookie QB and the best case scenario is to try and work out a fair deal for both sides so Locker can have CJ behind him for the next 3-4 years. Give CJ 7-8 mil a year and be done with it. Last year MJD signed a deal worth 31 mil over 5 years with 17.5 mil guaranteed. CJ deserves a little more than that.

The other issue with not paying CJ is what direction is this team going to go? Are we not going to pay FAs at all even if they are our own players? So if Morgan comes back from his injury and becomes a stud DE and goes to the pro bowl I guess we can look forward to watching him leave as well? Even if Britt gets his head on straight and becomes one of the best WRs in the AFC is it only for a few years and some other tam signs him? The bottom line is we need some core players and IMO CJ can be one of those guys for the next 4 years.

He'll get paid. The offense is built around him. I'm more inclined to side with Deuce and Ravens here though. Get him on the field this year and let him prove the downturn in production isn't a trend...

Let me get this straight...some of you actually think trading CJ would be a good thing? He's one of 2 offensive weapons we have and let's trade em because he wants to be paid?? Wow. I don't even see where anyone gets off saying he's had a downturn in production. There have been 6 guys that did what he did and never did it again. If you're expecting 2k every year then you have some sort of a disorder or are just flat out stupid. He's not a dime a dozen rb he's an elite top 3 back. You don't trade that away cuz he wants what he's worth. Jesus, get a clue.

He deserves to get paid here. I do not think that he has lost a step yet (last year was injuries+lousy OL play+being used like he was Eddie George). However, I am concerned that he has had his career shortened by how Fisher used him.

I would seriously bump the salary, but try to limit the term of the agreement to be less than three years...if that is possible here.

LOL about the get a clue part. How many of the "top three NFL elite" backs just completely fell off the map overnight in the last 12 years? All of them.. It will happen to CJ as well. Just figuring out when is the key. I do believe they will pay CJ and he'll be around a few more years but I doubt they put a noose around their neck to do so. And if he puts them in an impossible place where he wants the moon and stars then move on.

I don't think that's a major concern. The team has plenty of cap space (assuming there's a cap) now that Young is gone and so is Collins (he might be back, but probably for less). Locker will be fairly cheap for the first several years of his deal. It should be pretty easy to give CJ a sizable (but not record-breaking) contract with a lot of money up front. Then, when he finally does hit the wall in a few years, it will be easy to cut him.

I think some of you guys are making this a lot more complicated than it needs to be. CJ will do what he has to do to get a contract he's happy with, but I don't think he's going to demand anything insane.

In the NFL, you lock up your best players so you benefit from them while they are in their prime and then let them go when they are used up. That is the exactly the situation the Titans are in here.

    Crud,

Tell that to Terrell Davis. I could think of a lot of top 3 backs that had long careers. CJ is still pretty young and now that Fishers gone hopefully he wont be the next Eddie George.

Johnson is 25 years old. He will hit the wall some day. If history is any indication, it won't be until he's at least 28. The Titans can lock him up to a 5 or 6-year deal that makes it easy to cut him in the last few years.

I remember suggesting he be traded in some kind of deal for Asomugha last offseason, and a lot of people didn't like that notion. I know it would have been ironic that both players would have been traded because of money, but I don't understand why there is such a change in support of trading CJ.

If CJ is traded, the Titans need to get a blockbuster of a deal out of it. Think about what it really took to get CJ. We drafted Chris Brown in the second, signed Travis Henry to a multi-year deal, drafted Lendale White in the second, and drafted Chris Henry in the second all in the name of finding our feature back. Basically, we could be spending multiple early draft picks and sprinkle in various free agents over the better part of a decade until we find another Chris Johnson.

Serviceable backs are a dime a dozen, but Chris Johnson is rare. The man has proven himself. Great rookie season, then his phenomenal season, and then a season that even though he wasn't 100% and ran behind a line that featured a turnstile at center, was a top five rusher. There is no doubt that he is the real deal.

To sum this up, CJ shouldn't be traded simply because he's demanding big money. He's a rare talent that has panned out better than anyone expected. He's worth it. If he gets traded, it should be for a deal that's almost too good to be true.
