Titans GM Mike Reinfeldt has admitted he doesn't believe QB Rusty Smith has starter upside.

"He might not be a starter, but he could be a pretty darn good backup for a while," Reinfeldt said. "He’s got all the things you look for: the strong arm, the good size and he’s got a good touch, a quick release." That may be true, but the Titans are still expected to bring in a veteran to back-up No. 8 pick Jake Locker. Smith's 2011 ceiling is likely that of third-stringer.

I still think he has promise, i'd like to keep him around for a while as a back up.

Anyone else noticing a stark difference in the new regime's willingness to be straightforward compared to Fisher's regime? After years and years of Fisher-speak it's a very welcomed change. Nice to actually be somewhat in the loop for a change.

That wasn't quite what the point of what he said. The context was that he thinks Rusty can be a starter, but if he can't find a place to start, he's a high level backup. I think it's clear that he isn't starting here with the desire to start either Locker or a vet.

Reversed my opinion of Reinfeldt a while back but feeling even better about that after hearing this. I liked the Locker pick. I think we should get another athletic QB to develop behind him if at all possible. Bring in a Vet QB and an athletic true backup to groom and we're set.

Hopefully this new attitude the staff has will light a fire under some of the players. If they are being fairly direct to the media I am sure the words behind the scenes are alittle more stern.

Regardless, good luck to Rusty. I hope we seem him this year and he shows us some things.

Funny that now we like the honesty when in actuality Fisher and Dinger hardly ever talked up any of the guys at skill positions on offense. It seemed they always left the door open to the fact a guy was dog crap and had much to work on, including Britt. WHen was the last time they ever said anything real up beat about anyone? That was the whole point I made over the VY fiasco when people were saying Fisher never said nice things about Young. They rarely said anything good about any of the players seemingly to motivate them to the next level I guess.

I wasn't necessarily saying Fisher "talked up" guys. Just that he typically wasn't very honest and forthright with how he felt about a particular guy. He had stock answers for seemingly everything. He was the master of talking while saying absolutely nothing.

All I'm saying is I could never see him coming right out and saying "Rusty might not be starter material" or "We aren't going to re-sign Randy Moss." He would've been as vague as possible with his answers. We all know this.

Yeah. Any news stories about what MR or Munchak said in a press conference could actually be NEWS, not just a vague answer left to be interpreted.

For a guy who NEVER wanted to make a foreshadowing statement in press, he sure ran a predictable offense.
