    It depends. You know those people who get off to mindless torture p0rn? Yeah, they consider that sh*t art. So no, I don't always appreciate the "art" behind a movie.

    Give me both entertainment and art since it's kinda hard to appreciate something when you're not awake to witness it.

    Heh, don't take this personally, but you just reminded me of this chick I had an argument with in my class the other day. As a class, we were discussing our favorite movies, and she started listing every classic she could think of, and when she started praising "American Beauty", this one guy called it overrated and she freaked out, so I jumped in, sided with the guy and pretty much told her what I said in my first post. She really couldn't retort, as it was obvious she either didn't see half of the movies she listed or really just didn't feel it, and this other guy, that wanted in her pants, was like "it's her opinion, she's entitled to it." and I just chuckled and said "it's not an opinion if you can't explain why it's your opinion, essentially it's the same as if I asked you why do you think Obama is a bad or good president, it's not like I'm asking why strawberries taste better than grapes."

    As you can see from the other posts, you're the only one to give me a long list of the big name classics.

    Hmm, sounds intriguing, but I hope they're not like the "sequels" to "Infernal Affairs" where not only did they just pale in comparison, but you also get the sense they really didn't need to be made.

    In case you don't know what I'm referring to, "Infernal Affairs" is the original "The Departed", in Chinese. Very much worth a view regardless if you seen "The Departed" or not.

    I think there is certain stigma attached to liking quality film. It is one of my strongest passions and I treat it just as you would treat your passion. I'm not a snob, an elitist, or an "artsy fartsy" person as Chap. called me. I can always back up my opinions and I never force them on anyone else. Also, I listed classics for a reason...they are classics. That doesn't mean that I don't like the occasional popcorn flick. Anyone can back me up that has heard me talk about movies on this board...I love horror. Let's face it, horror is kind of ridiculous but G'D it, I love everything about it. I have a wide variety of interests in movies and I don't just watch one genre or "type"...I watch them all.

    If I offended you, I apologize. I just take my film very seriously. I graduated from film school last year after years of dreaming about going. If I'm not seeing a movie, I'm pretty much lost. It is my life and I would very much like to make a career out of it. I had to turn down an internship in New York last year because I didn't have enough money to move. I'm still hurting over that one. Perhaps another day...You can make fun of a guy for having a dream, but a person without a dream doesn't have much, do they?

    Whether it be music, art, film or literature...everyone has a right to be critical. I won't apologize for that. You shouldn't either.

    You're a movie buff and that's cool, but see, my point was "classic" is now a irrelevant title to me because, as I said before, a lot of hype for those movies are from folks (not saying you specifically) who are afraid of being "flamed." "Oh no, the man has an opinion, the horror!"

    Pretty much, telling me something is a classic doesn't mean I'm automatically sold. Unless it's Bob Marley, you can hate it as much as the next person loves it, because let's face it, you will not meet one person that dislikes Bob Marley. Not one.

    Another one I haven't seen and have high interest is "Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind", any opinions?

    Note: I do really enjoy movies with that quirky and free-spirit vibe. And "The Truman Show" is one of my favorites, if that helps.

    Eternal Sunshine is a great movie. I didn't expect it to be so relevant or dare I say it, so incredible when I first saw it. Years later it still holds up as a genuine and stylish ode to all of the great romantic comedies. Plus, Charlie Kaufman (in my opinion, one of the greatest living screenwriters) wrote it and one of the most talented French directors, Michael Gondry directed it. Definitely watch it, you won't be disappointed. Jim Carrey's performance is about as real as it gets, the guy is automatic in this one. Kate Winslet does a fantastic job as well playing one of the most memorable characters (in my mind) of the 2000's. I'd also like to add that some people consider this movie a classic.

    I hated Eternal Sunshine. One of those films you watch wondering "ok... are they going to get to the point?" from midway til the end.

    Painful watch and I'm upset 2 hours of my life were spent watching another artsy BS film with no real direction.
