I agree Stanzi is growing on me. I like him and Dalton while I could live with Mallett.

Does Mallett not seem like he'd be as bad as Collins?

Why would Stanzi be growing on people at this point? Read the reports on him. Everyone says his stock is free-falling because he sucked at the Combine and no one thinks he can be an accurate passer. Some called him the worst passer at the Combine.

That one makes no sense to me. Talking about taking him in round 2 or 3 is ridiculous. He'll be lucky to go in the 5th based on the stuff analysts are saying right now.

    Well...

Somewhat similar in that they both can flat out spin the ball, neither is fleet of foot, and both have questionable decisionmaking under pressure and tough defenses.

What we don't know is Mallett's off the file interviews where he'll either convince someone he can lead their team and franchise or he can't. His off the field interview and thought process and work ethic will go a long way towards his success or failure.

How many times have teams sat in a deep shell and forced qb's to take what is there. Mallett doesn't want an open wr, he wants to throw it deep! If he can't adjust, he's in trouble!

Why do you put ANY stock in to the combine?

Maybe we should do something worthwhile like- watch what they did in college... ON FIELD... AGAINST teams???

God, the draft prospect evaluation is so ridiculous these days... "Oh, so and so had a great day throwing the football around and doing drills that have nothing to do with real football! He's my number 1!!... That other guy, well... regardless of how he played in college, he didn't run around cones fast enough for me!"

    It's silly.

The combine is worthless for players that proved themselves in college- or SHOULD be. But NFL scouts are just as dumbfounded as casual fans when it comes to 40 times and other silly nonsense.

Stanzi can't be accurate... Yet Blaine Gabbert can be? Stanzi has gotten better every year, which is far more telling about him than anything we have on Gabbert. Stanzi completed 64% of his passes in a PRO STYLE offense.. not some dink and dunk forward lateral offense like Gabbert, Newton, etc. Gabbert had a lesser completion % in a much easier offense than Stanzi against much weaker teams also.

    Scouts are dumb.

That's all there is to it.

    Um...

I didn't intend fir such a long post...so grab a snack and commence munching!:)

Those same experts were trumpeting Jevan Snead, Jimmy Clausen, and Matt Leinart. Oops!

No qb besides Mallett looked good so almost everyones in the same boat with that.

But start with the wonderlic...bye bye Newton and Locker. Scoring below a 25 is about a 90% bust rate if you're looking for an elite qb. Of all th qb's with below a 25 wonderlic, McNabb is the ONLY qb who has been an elite or near elite franchise qb.

Mallett reminds me of Nuke LaRoushe (from a movie). Million dollar arm, $.02 head. He has all kinds of red flags. Of the 'flawed elite,' I like him the best, but only if he checks out leadership/work ethic wise. Plus, Mallett's stats suggest he wilts under pressure in the big games. A disturbing red flag.

Ponder is a jeckyl and Hyde guy. Are you getting the great jr or the mediocre sr? With a weaker arm, and injury concerns about concussions and an injury to his throwing arm...yikes!

Whose left? Gabbert who fleas the pocket at a moments notice and can't find the endzone throwing it a million times and whose accuracy over 15 yds make Newton look like Peyton Manning!? No thank you.

Who IS left? Dalton is only 6'2 and comes from a dicey conference. Solid mud pick though...

And then there's Stanzi who has no red flags other than he doesn't have a strong arm and can't run like the wind? How about a guy who knows how to manage the game and take his shots. How about hid 3 toughest games where he actually played BETTER than his season stats (7 td's and 0 int's and a robust 67% completion percentage.). Only Newton has excellent numbers against his toughest opponents of the other qb's mentioned. Stanzi has been on the leadership council for what...2 years?

And btw, didn't Tom Brady have a 'weak arm' coming out of college?

I have NOT suggested Stanzi is a top 5 pick but rather a good alternative to gambling on greatness in round 1.

I'm not willing to overdraft a qb simply because we need one.

And despite that 1 or more of these qb's COULD buck history's trends, it would be unwise to take such a gamble. You may as well put the next 2-4 years on a number at the roulette wheel. You COULD come up huge, but most likely we lose.

Forget a qb in round one. Sign a free agent who will start anyway while we fix the D and OL or take a major impact player!

And a little sobering thought for those so quick to risk a few tears in a flawed franchise qb. If we miss, cj's career has a good chance at being over before you gamble again!

You both make good arguments for Stanzi. I like him, too. My question was just about why he would be growing on people when he's had a rough time lately. I am certainly on board with putting a lot more stock in his game film than Combine stuff, but the game film is all old so it doesn't really make sense that his draft stock would be improving at this point.

Sadly, it kind of seems like Stanzi is attractive simply because all the other guys are so unattractive. That said, I think I'd be okay with Stanzi in round 3 or 4. I expect some team will have to reach for him because QBs will be in such high demand.

Ricky Stanzi's mothers name is Mary Jane LOL.

Seems like some Titan fan on youtube is a Stanzi fan.
