Exactly how I feel. I don't think there is a QB in this draft that is NFL ready, all of them need atleast one year to sit and learn. With that being said, I still see teams reaching on Gabbert and Newton.

I still think our plan should be get a defensive playmaker: Bowers, Patrick Peterson, Von Miller would be my favorites. Then draft a QB in the 2nd (Mallett), and with the rest of the draft improve our defense.

Breaking down some Cam Newton stats...Stats compiled in SEC games only..

Passes over 15 yards. Completed 49% 7 Tds and 3 ints

Facing a blitz... 5 or more rushing the passer. Completed 73% of his passes with 5 Tds and 0 ints.

Outside the pocket.. Completed 66% of his passes with 2 Tds and 0 ints

In the pocket.... Completed 67% of his passes. 14 Tds and 3 ints

So how do you defend him? He was superior to Gabbert in every one of these categories!

So the Broncos made a mistake getting John Elway? He was not nfl ready either in his first year.

Was Steve Young nfl ready his first year? Not by your defnition.

Look at Warren Moon's stats his first few years in the nfl.

A lot of hall of fame QBs were not what you would call nfl ready as rookies. Even Peyton Manning struggled as a rookie.

Is a franchise QB a long term investment or someone who is supposed to diminate from game 1?

The problem is...that Newton, Gabbert, and Locker all have more bust than boom. The flip side is, this is a quarterback driven league and probably 8-10 teams NEED a QB in some way. So someone will draft these guys and HOPE (pray, ect) that their guy will boom cause busting sets you back quite a bit.

As far as someone trying to defend Gabbert, here are some stats you might want to think about. In his 3 toughest games, he threw 3 TD's and 3 Int's. He didn't throw more than 1 TD in any game and and those 3 TD's are in 141 pass attempts. That's about 1 in every 47 throws...a ridiculously BAD stat. And to further enhance that point, against the 9 toughest opponents, he only threw 2 or more TD passes in 3 of them! Most TOP QB prospects throw 2 or more in MOST of their games (at least 50% as a minimum). And we're not even talking about his game against the 'vaunted' Texas Tech D that saw him complete BELOW 50% and throw for 0 TD's. And people are talking about this Spread offense QB as the #1 overall pick?

    WHY???

    JUST SAY NO!!!!

You know who Gabbert reminds me of? Matt Leinart! And we can sign him without wasting the 8th pick in the draft!

    Well...

Well, almost no QB is ready to start from day 1 and be more of a help than a detriment. Of course that doesn't mean that Elway or Manning were not worth taking. However, they are light years ahead of the Blaine Gabbert and Jake Locker's and Cam Newton's. All of these guys have multiple red flags!

Plus, with the success of Flacco, Ryan, and Bradford, fans are getting spoiled seeing new QB's come in and be solid or better. The ONLY guy I could see starting from day 1 of the (expert annointed top group) is Mallett. Of course, that's IF his red flags check out!

I'd take Stanzi in rnd 2 over any of these guys in rnd 1.

    Gut

BTW - Moon SHOULD have been more ready than most from day 1 in the NFL since he went to the Canadien Football league for years and dominated!

That's a hard stat to defend. He only had 16 Td passes in 475 total attempts and he had an all conference TE and a 2nd team all conference WR.

In Newton's 7 biggests games(SC X2, BAMA, LSU, Miss St, Arkansas Oregon) he had 14 tds and 1 int. A TD in every 11 throws! It's like night and day.

People say Newton benefited from easy screen passes but he completed almost 50% of all his passes over 15 yards.

Oh and Newton rushed for over 170 yards in 4 of those 7 big games.

To borrow a line from Reservoir Dogs sometimes you just have to crap your pants and swim. Take the QB with the biggest star potential and run with it. At least Newton can give you that extra element of being able to pick up first downs with his legs. Any player you take with that 8th pick to become a bust. To me it's a no brainer if Newton is there you draft him.

Passing rating against AP ranked teams 2010.. Numbers rounded.

    Dalton 169
    Newton 169
    Mcelroy 161
    Stanzi 153
    Mallett 150
    Locker 114
    Gabbert 113
    Ponder 91

A high wonderlic score can't make up for a lack of balls.

You're wasting your time with all this Newton stuff. Not only will he be off the board at #8, the Titans are the last team in the league that would take him.
