Vince was pretty full of himself, too. Remember when he said he'd make the Hall of Fame? Remember "can't tell me nothin'"?

The super c0cky athlete thing bugs me. I admit that sometimes it works and helps a guy's career because it gives him a confidence boost (Terrell Owens), but often it just sounds like a sad attempt to pump himself up by a guy who is mentally weak (Vince Young, Cam Newton?).

Vince has the same attitude as half the league. Difference is he's Vince Young a QB. Everyone is interested in what he does and says, even his biggest critics. Go talk to some more guys around the league, you'll see what I mean. I don't agree with that mind set, but it is what it is. Ideally you want players who play for the love of the game, not guys looking to cash in. Problem is it's hard to tell who's real and who's fake when all these guys get taught on how to speak to suits before they ever meet them.

And that's part of why it matters that Newton is saying this stuff.

I don't give a crap if some scrub WR thinks he's hot sh*t. I care when it's my franchise QB. The difference is HUGE.

Newton already sees himself as an icon. He's already rich (he has an endorsement deal already and he'll be a high draft pick and get big money, even if there's a rookie cap). Why the hell would he bother to work hard at his craft? That's the exact problem that Vince was never able to overcome. He was so full of himself (even if it was partially due to his own insecurities) that he never put in the work it takes to be a truly great QB. Cam looks like he is going down the exact same road.

When I'm drafting a QB, one of the first things I'm looking for is a player who is hungry. I don't see that in Cam. Not even close.

Ray Lewis was supposedly a criminal and he was pretty good.

Cam doesn't seem hungry? You know this how he hasn't lost a game in 2 years, won the National Championship, and the Heisman how "hungry" does he have to be?

ewww... I'm all for a winner... but we also need someone that knows how to lose too....In terms of learning, losing is wayyy more important than winning... it helps you see your weaknesses rather than your strength and helps you work on it... if all someone does is win in high school and college level, it might be hard to swallow a loss which will happen in the pros

Winning games in college doesn't mean you are going to put in the work necessary to be successful in the pros. Give me a break. As a Titans fan, you should know that all too well. Have you already forgotten about Vince Young? I seem to remember him being pretty dominant in college.

I have every right to question how hungry Newton is based on 1) rumors about his work ethic and 2) his recent quotes. It is a valid question.

Are we really going to compare every QB to Vince Young?

Unfortunately, I believe all fans will be discussing/comparing/arguing about VY for a while, and this happens especially when you have a very similar prospect (note: I did not say same) that has most of the same potential and makes similar statements. Of course, what everyone seems to forget is, he most likely will not be available -> there are 5 other QB hungry teams ahead of us in the draft. I believe he may be in Buffalo when all is said and done, if Al Davis doesn't trade up to get him.

    Only the black ones. :)

It is the inverse of basketball prospects -- where white prospects are compared to current/former white players, Europeans to Europeans, and so forth.

    Not really.

Cam Newton is compared to Vince Young because he's essentially the same prospect.

Has nothing to do with him being a 'black quarterback'.

    1. Tall athletic QBs that made their living running before passing.
    2. Both won the National Championship their final years in a storybook way.
    3. Both extremely hyped with many of the same question marks. Can he hit targets in stride? Can he read a defense? Was he part of the system? Can he take snaps under center?... get it?

Cam Newton can just as easily be compared to Tim Tebow- but since Tebow hasn't had an NFL run yet, you wont see that one.
