Everyone always uses this bogus argument that running QB's can't win the big game! 1. If you look at what constitutes a running QB this argument is untrue!
    2. If you look at the facts and numbers you see saying a running QB
can't win the SBowl is like saying before 2008 a black person could
    not be president.

The number of opportunities are so far beneath the number of
occurrences odds are of course highly unlikely. Which coincidentally
they both number in the 40's. There has been 44 Presidents and
this year is the 45th Superbowl.

    Let's define the QB types!

We all know a Pocket Passer is one who stays in the pocket, continuously maneuvers himself in the pocket until a passing opportunity presents itself.
    &
Here is a nice little definition found on yahoo that someone created along with QB's that are statistically Running QB's.

    http://sports.yahoo.com/nfl/news?slug=ycn-7454032

Yea I don't agree with the pinpoint accuracy.
However if you look at the statistics there have been 4 running QB's to win the Superbowl. Yes this is debatable on the surface but statistically it is not.

    1. Roger Stauback won 2! 2264 Career rushing yds, 20 TD's.
    2. Doug Williams won 1! 884 Career rushing yds, 15 TD's. Only played 3 complete seasons!!! Only black QB to win SB.
    3. John Elway won 2! 3407 Career rushing yds, 33 TD's
    4. Steve Young won 1! 4239 Career rushing yds, 43 TD's.

Like I said, yes this is debatable on the surface but statistically no! The only difference is these QB's had more passing yards and today's QB's are arguably more athletic.

So if we don't include not one of these guys has running QB's. We go to the odds of occurrences.
We will say that each QB for each team beginning in 1970 counts as an occurrence. We start with 1970 because beginning with the first SB in 1967 the league was still the NFL and AFL playing the big game at the end.
That leaves us with 42 SB's including this years. No running QB's in playoffs.

With the league going from 26 teams to 28 then 30 and finally 32 teams, overall that gives us 1070 occurrences. 24 of these were SB winners.

My list of running QB's will be at the bottom. So giving an estimated 10 years per QB with a few not even playing more than 2 the running QB occurrences estimate at 380. We can round up to 4.

So 400 Running vying for 24 SB's from 1070 Pocket! The odds are terrible, and I've greatly exaggerated the number of running QB's.

Until there are more opportunities and more running QB's this argument is just fodder for running QB's to continue to not get the respect and credit they deserve!

Yea this is long! However this is just the beginning of what you are not thinking about when you make the argument that running QB's cannot win the Superbowl!

Either I'm really drunk and don't understand anything you've said or this is a dumb thread... or both.

EDIT: I really don't get this. Are those QBs you listed supposed to be good?... because most of them are pure garbage.

The belief that Mobile QBs can't win SB's is crap. Rapelessburger won one and he's a mobile guy. McNair would have won if our defense didn't choke, and Aaron rogers is about to win one lol

IMO mobile and running qbs are two different things. A mobile qb is a quarterback that can get out of the pocket and scramble for yards when they feel pressure or see that nobody is open. A running qb on the other hand is a qb that plans on running or only looks at one or two wrs before he takes off. A good way to differentiate between the two is to look at rushing attempts. If a qb averages 3-4 rush attempts per game he is most likely a mobile qb. However if a qb is running the ball 6 or more times a game he is probably a running qb. There is no problem with having some escapability, but there is a problem when it prevents you from going through all your reads.

What do you call McNair? He had plays designed for him to run, he bought time in the pocket, and he could throw

Charlie Batch a mobile QB? No. Doug Williams wasn't close.

I define a runner as a guy who over a season will have 2X the rushing attempts of the average nfl QB. Roethlisberger does not fit that description because he stays in the ocket until the last second. He probably could rush for 400 yards a season but does not look to run any more than average.

Agree with the basic premise but we need to agree on a defnition.

Mcnair-Mcnabb-Vick-Culpepper-Garrard-Young examples of modern day runners at the QB position. Tebow and Freeman are 2 young guys who fit that description. Cam Newton and terelle Pryor will be the next generation of QBs who can run. Luck and Locker can also be that type of QB.

I absolutely, find the notion repugnant that just because a guy is a great athlete he must then also be a poor passer and or dumb.

Anyone who says a mobile quarterback can't win the Super Bowl is an idiot.

However, it is fair to say that a mobile quarterback who can't read defenses and make all the throws is worse than a pure pocket passer. That's the distinction.

There are guys who have made it to the NFL because they were so athletically gifted that they were able to succeed in college without ever making NFL-level throws. Then they make it to the NFL and they find out that they can't read a defense properly. Those guys almost always fail.

I'm from Houston and I know Andre ran the ball as well. He didn't get to run in the NFL because he didn't play that long. Like 2 years tops of starting.
