Well, I've changed my mind. I just watched some games videos (not highlights) of Jake Locker, and I wouldn't be mad taking him at #8. The front office would have to determine his ability to grasp coverages, playbooks, etc. But, he is not an athlete playing quarterback. He can accurately throw the ball from any position, from any angle, from any point on the field. He has mastered the football, no other way of saying it. It's also very clear that he is surrounded by the worst talent I've ever seen (exaggeration, but you get my point).

What first got me to revisit Locker was something I had just read. Washington WRs have dropped 41 passes this season. Stanford WRs have dropped 17. If Washington WRs had dropped only 17 passes all season, then Locker's completion % would have been 62.6% (from 55.4%). His WRs get no separation, his windows are very small, but he still gets them there. His OL is worse. The interior is horrible, Locker can never step up. Yet, if you watch, he almost always sets his feet (when he's in the pocket) before he throws. He has great feet, they are fluid, quick, and always moving.

Now, for his faults. I never saw him make multiple progressions, but that could've been due to poor OL play, he just never had the time. Also, he will force it, but again, his WRs don't get any separation. What else is he supposed to do? Finally, his accuracy on the deep ball can be improved. He can get it there, he just needs to put more air underneath it. EDIT: He also holds onto the ball too long. Usually, you want to see the drop (3, 5, 7), feet set, ball out. But, he rarely does that, I don't know if it's because his WRs are covered.

After watching him again, with the intention of looking at his surrounding talent, I realized he has done amazing work with very little. I just want to encourage you to watch game videos (not highlights) of him, and pay attention to his WR, OL, and RB. Stats are meaningless if you don't consider the context. I honestly believe he can be our franchise QB. That is all.

Good quality video, just to get you started. :thumb:

I wish the NFL had developed a farm system 30 years ago instead of relying on college football.

The gimmick offenses that are used at the college level are going to ruin the NFL. It's almost impossible to evaluate offensive players now. You have guys like Tim Tebow who never took a snap from center in his life(including high school) who's supposed to come in and learn an NFL playbook while trying learn the things he should have known how to do since his freshman year.

I think it is a fair assessment.

The two primary reasons that I'm anti-Locker is that I don't think he has shown very much improvement in 4 years and more importantly, he is injury prone.

I agree with what you're saying, but it's not really applicable to Locker. He's in a pro-style offense and has been making full reads for a few years now. His physical ability may still be a bit raw (throwing mechanics might need a bit of work), but the scouting staff will have plenty of film of Locker doing the things a pro quarterback will be asked to do.

Locker does go through multiple progressions, but his o-line is so bad that he often is rushed to make a throw. As a result of this, Washington calls a lot of roll-outs and other plays that prevent Locker from standing in the pocket and getting hammered. He could be a completely different player behind a real o-line.

For those who pay closer attention than I, what kind of a grade is Locker getting? 1st round? 2nd round? I know it's all pretty speculative until the combine but I recall hearing him mentioned as a 2nd rounder on more than one occasion.

If he ends up projected as a 2nd rounder I think he might be our best option (despite his flaws) since there isn't a slam dunk QB in this year's draft. Pick up a top defender with the 8th overall pick. Then grab Locker early in the 2nd or maybe even trade up to the bottom of the 1st to be safe. If we're going to take a gamble I'd much rather roll the dice on Locker in the late 1st/early 2nd than Mallett or Newton with the 8th overall.

He didn't make more than one progression the entire game...Definitely a red flag. He stares down his receiver, if he's not open he'll tuck it and run regardless of pressure. And then do it all over again the next play.

The dude doesn't look like he knows how to read defenses...

I expect him to get taken in the early 1st.

Just because he's rated lower like a 2nd round pick doesn't mean he won't go in the top 20.
