Is it typical for an NFL QB to go IR for this type of thumb injury? Or is the IR just a means to keep VY away from the team for the rest of the season? If there had been no drama last Sunday, would Vince still go to IR for this injury?

Also what is the typical recovery time? Fully healed in time for next season training camp, or could it linger into next season?

    It's about a 12 week recovery.

Tendon injuries are a bear and take a while to heal. I have a couple of achilles ruptures to my credit.

Ouch! I've had mine bruised pretty badly, but it didn't tear. Even that felt like a knife cut me sideways. It was very painful. You've have it happen more than once, poor guy.

On day 4 of the flexor tendon being tore I bet you that finger is double the size of the other fingers on that hand from the swelling, unless he is on anti-inflammitories.

We didn't get a lot of information about how bad (partial, complete) or what part (mid-pt or insertion) where regarding the tear. That has a significant bearing on the extent and time-table for recovery. If surgery was recommended, the tear was probably extensive and near the insertion point. The most important aspect of the injury is that it is his thumb. You just can't "buddy-tape" a thumb- it is the major working digit of the hand. The flexor tendon of the thumb has to work properly to maintain grip strength- something necessary to make accurate throws and tight spirals.

Usually a 3 -4 month period is necessary to begin to stress the surgical site again. However, the injury and surgery will alter the normally smooth function and "fitting" of the tendon through various structures (ligaments). That alteration will cause a prolonged proclivity for inflammation with any significant degree of use. That translates to varying degrees of pain with the movements.

Vince should definitely get a second opinion from somebody like James Andrews in B'ham to make certain that surgery is indeed indicated. If Andrews agrees it is, then Vince should have it done immediately.

It doesn't matter the severity of the injury, Fisher is using it as the out not to have to deal with Vince. I'd also like for Vince to get a second opinion.

Considering what you've posted, and what I interpret from it, with only 6 games left in the regular season it would be highly doubtful for a recovery in 2010....correct?

What did Kerry Collins do to his finger? Was it the same type injury?

It's not uncommon to IR guys this late in the season if they're going to miss several weeks. It's not like it's week 2. Teams need the roster spot.
