I've always thought, even from my first viewing, that Childs was infected. The fact that he literally disappeared for a while, to me, says to me that he had gotten alone with the organism and he was therefore going to kill McCready.

Yeah, yeah, yeah I know Carpenter himself has said he has no idea about who really was the thing, but I do honestly believe he always intended Childs to have it, and just doesn't want to mess with people's fun. After all, one of the best things to come from The Thing-cult is speculating on the end.

Yeah, I gotta agree about the Muppet conviction. At that point it became obvious that Lucas was trying to reel in another demographic. CGI added fuel to the fire by allowing him to create He Whom Shall Not Be Mentioned Here But Was Offensive To Reggae Fans.

^100% CGI... and you wouldn't have known unless I told you.

But really, CGI is way better than real life captures/models. Incomparable really, just due to the impressive things CGI can create with no limits vs the limited imagery of real models.

    first very good looking.

By the 10 min mark it is obvious it is CGI. When Roman did show a human it was not conviencing - IMO.

This short shows exactly what CGI does best, which is make things that are impossible IRL. And although this movie was a visual feast there really was not a story, at least none that I picked up on. In other words 10-12 mins of sterile crisp imagry without story is probably twice as much as I would need.

But really nobody is saying CGI should be banned just that it needs to be used judishously (however its spelled)

And of course that ^ certainly doesn't represent a huge percentage of the CG we see in today's movies.
CG has it's place, which is mainly in regard to saving money ala the massive cost of locations and elaborate sets.
Safety is another huge reason. Of course CG is also much cheaper than squibs (or a real guy, firing a real gun ala this pick of Cagney getting oh so close to dying when they used live bullets and a sharpshooter onset)

I have yet to see a modern CG shoot em up that looks any more realistic than stuff shot back in the early 70's..

There's no denying CG is here to stay. Filming budgets guarantee it. Look to folks like Nicotero who use it in concert with practical and you still have a much more convincing result than 100% CG. The Walking Dead trumps I Am Will Smith zombies every time..

Still, no similar genre movie since has been better than Alien or (Carpenter's) The Thing.
FX aren't 100% of the reason but damn, those movies still look great..
