I thought we would lose at that point if we didn't keep the lead at 19-7 at least at halftime.

I answered your question. I said I thought it was a possibility. I know 19 points was certainly not going to be enough.

This is a bend-but-don't-break defense on most weeks. Gives up a ton of yards to even average or struggling offenses, but finds ways to force turnovers and field-goals. That's dangerous against a team that already puts up a huge amount of offensive yards on a daily basis, WITH players who can finish (see Gates).

The defense broke today. Doesn't mean it's broken for the rest of the season.

You do understand this isn't the NFC, right? And we can't afford to lose games like this, regardless of it being in week 8.

Do you understand a game like this could come back and haunt us at the end of the year?

This is the AFC, and not the NFC...

Do i need to name all the AFC teams that will be competing with us in the final stages of the season?

But this is an issue in itself. Does anyone honestly think this team can get to the super bowl with that kind of defense? IMO they need to find a way to not bend at all..instead of hoping that key turnover is going to come along to save the game.

Honestly, I figured San Diego would come back. 19-7 to 27-19, and people actually thought we didn't just sit there.

Some of you are convinced this is a Super Bowl team. It most likely isn't. Not the way they're playing.

This is a good team, a team that will have to fight to make the playoffs in an extremely competitive AFC. 4 games against Indy and Houston will make or break this team's chances. That's when it's time to go bat sh*t.

We're not getting a wildcard spot. Its win the division or sit on the sidelines this year, so this loss doesn't really matter. If we beat the colts/texans we'll make the playoffs, simple as that.

Thank you for admitting that a loss is not a LOSS.

My point is that alot of people on this board try to say "It's just one loss". In a tight race, this game means alot, regardless of not being a division game.

That's why i can't accept this as being "just a loss" and nobody cares..

Too many little things got left on the carpet today to come away with a victory. I agree, we are a good team, over all pretty solid, but you can't go three and out as habitually as we seem to do, especially with a lead in the second half against a team at home that is desperate for a win to keep their hopes for winning their division and a playoff berth alive, and call yourself elite !!!

The consistent "third and long" scenario just doesn't bode well for this team and their offensive philosophy. The run blocking is absolutely horrid this year, can't for the life of me figure out why, but it flat out sucks. Also, in my opinion CJ just doesn't seem right this year either. Not saying he isn't an "elite" back, or that he isn't still a dangerous weapon, but he is not hitting the (admittedly few) holes that the O line does open with any authority this year, and appears to always be looking for a home run ball instead of accepting the fact that a 2nd and 6 or 3rd and 2 is a hell of a lot better than "maybe" getting an 85 yd TD run every single play/game. Again, I do think the O line has been borderline pathetic in terms of their run blocking so maybe it's all down that factor, but I can't shake the feeling that he doesn't have the same burst, and same focus that he had (for example the alligator arm try to grab the 2 pt conversion, and the dropped 4th down conversion) the prior two years. Perhpas he has bought into his own hype a bit too much ?? Also, can anyone tell me why SD could get 7-10 yds. with every single screen pass they threw and Cj couldn't get more than 1-4 yds. the few times we tried it ??? Utterly baffling !

The D was plain and simple pretty awful all day, especially on the longer third downs we managed to get them into. The fact that we seemed oblivious to the screen pass (how many times was that run for huge chunks of yardage repeatedly ?) was maddening. The pressure we got on Rivers was mediocre and it pains me to think that the Rams were able to shut that clown down consistently while he managed to pick our secondary apart all day, especially in the second half. Elite defense ? NOT so much after today if you ask me... How many defensive offsides does it take for this defense before they start watching the damn ball before going on the snap count ??? How bad did Witherspoon look on covering Gates when he ran (easily) for the TD ? So many miscues on defense it was sickening...

Vince had a fair day, his first half stats were solid, but not mind blowing, but in the second half he threw a few WTF balls that could have kept drives moving and would have given the defense some time to recuperate... Not that impressed with his second half performance for sure...

How does Griffin get called for a ticky-tack holding call that admittedly was a hold, but looked with in the 5 yard allowable zone, but then Gates is allowed to get away with a huge push off that was abut 7 yds down field on Griffin on an important 3 and long conversion ? What about the blatant PI (right in front of a side judge) on the 3rd and long when Kerry was rolling out to the right and pointed to Hawk to go long and he was chucked out of bounds by the DB... That one blew my mind how that wasn't a 5 yd first down call there I will never know... Then CJ drops a fairly easy pass on 4th and 2 to seal the deal.

I liked what I saw for about a half of this game, but between the inconsistent offensive play, the generally poor defensive play, and some dubious officiating, I think this one had the vibe of an already predetermined loss to me. Certainly wasn't Fisher or Vince's or Kerry's fault... This one was TEAM LOSS period !

I wish I could feel super optimistic like some of our members (KamiKaz and Rolltide specifically), but I think we have some extremely difficult games looming on the horizon with Indy, Houston, Miami, and even KC, not feeling uber-confident that we are a lock to win the division at all, nor that we will even make the playoffs if this game was any indication. This was a win I felt we had to have to set us up pretty sweetly for the second half of the season, and of course we didn't get it done as usual against the Chargers.
