He's behind one of the best (if not most hated) QBs in the game. I guarantee you he could be starting in Oakland, Buffalo, Cleveland, Jacksonville right now. He's getting up there though. He spent his best years sitting on a bench.

Exactly. If Volek was legit starting quarterback material, he wouldn't have accepted a backup role behind a QB like Rivers. He wouldn't have signed an extension in a city where he has no chance to compete for a starting role.

If Volek is content being a backup then he would never be a good starting QB. You need that competitive fire. He's another Jim Sorgi. The dude is happy to earn his paycheck as a backup.

That's the point I was trying to make. Let's hope Rusty is shooting for a starting spot with a "I won't be denied" mentality. Every player should have that.

Except it's not necessarily a good point. Volek was miffed at the Titans. Personally, I think it had more to do with them bringing in Collins than anything else. I'm sure he felt he earned starter in his years backing up McNair. He agreed to a trade with San Diego. At the time, He had many more games and starts under his belt than Rivers. At the time, he probably felt he could eventually supplant Rivers. And who knows? Had he been traded during the offseason instead of shortly after the season started and had time to learn their offense, Volek may have been the guy in San Diego, or at least earned his way into a starter role elsewhere. I clearly remember him wanting to start games, and not wanting to be a backup. He's talented, but things just never panned out for him. He's had two great QB's ahead of him for his career.

Volek has done well filling in for Rivers when he has been called on. Because you're not a starter doesn't mean you aren't starting material. Tom Brady may have never been a star had the guy ahead of him not been hurt. And Kurt Warner with Trent Green.
They may have been career backups. Volek is no Tom Brady, but just making the point that just because you've been a backup doesn't mean you aren't starting caliber. He's behind one of the best QBs in the league.

Also, Smith is only interesting to me because he's a guy Heimerdinger wants. He's still a sixth round QB and Tom Brady's are very rare. I hope Smith pans out as I do with every player we acquire. I just don't understand why Smith's bandwagon is so full right now. And yeah, it's good to see he's working and making progress, but that fluff piece could probably be written about every rookie QB in the league. Do we expect to read about him sitting at home and eating cheetos?

If he sticks, I'd say he's at least two more years to get a real chance. My guess is that Collins retires after this season. We then draft another late round QB that everyone chirps about, possibly an undrafted free agent. Hell, maybe it will be Neil O'Donnell. And I think it's probably still pointless. I think Young may still have his best ball ahead of him, especially with a contract year coming up.

Good quarterbacks don't remain career backups, in my opinion. Tom Brady's talent would have eventually shown, regardless of whether Drew Bledsoe got hurt (although injuries can definitely speed up the process). Even if you're behind a great starter, some team will recognize your talent and trade for you (e.g. Matt Schaub). 10 years as a backup for Volek tells me that he's just not starter material. The guy has barely even been on the field in the past 3 years. Great backup to have, though. I do wish the Titans had held on to him.

My main point is that if you are using Volek as a measuring stick for Rusty Smith, then Rusty better the heck surpass your expectations. Clearly he still has a lot of developing to do, but I have hopes that Rusty can be more than Volek is or ever was.

I heard PK, himself, talking about this article this morning...after taking a few jabs at VY for not being media friendly. (The Zone) Of course, he indicated the timing was not related...and that VY is a good person.

Funny how PK always manages to give himself a few pats on the back when he's on the air. That said, the article on Smith was worth reading.

That list is almost endless. Rob Johnson, Matt Schaub, Matt Cassel, AJ Feely, pretty much every backup Bret Favre has ever had.
