The Other Guys -

Although fairly high consensus score on Rotten Tomatoes, I've heard a lot of complaining from audiences, saying it just wasn't funny, that Dinner for Schmucks is funnier, Will Ferrell is just doing his tired old thing. I guess I saw a different film, because I really enjoyed this.


Keep in mind that the only Adam McCay film I've ever liked was Step Brothers (which is perhaps the least liked of all his films), and thought Anchorman and Talladega Nights were vastly overrated. This is probably his most "fun" film, as it really is a refreshing take on the Buddy-Cop genre. Will Ferrel is probably the best I've seen him since Old School - to me, just looking at his face in his "forensic accountant" character was hilarious. But there are other things going for the film. Marky Mark is surprisingly competent in this, with some fantastic moments. It's a treat to see Keaton do his thing again (God, this man needs more film appearances!), and though Samuel L. Jackson and The Rock are criminally underused, they are funny.

Mostly though, the movie works because the jokes are pretty consistent. Sure, there are definitely some duds, but the film throws a lot of solid laughs in. There are 3 scenes that had me close to tears.

 

Crazy Heart 8.5/10

It's exactly like The Wrestler, except with country music. I'm not big into country, probably my least favorite type of music, but I really enjoyed this movie. Surprisingly good soundtrack.

 

I haven't been to a movie in a while now. I do want to see The Other Guys. That's all that really appeals to me at the moment.

I couldn't believe he was the same guy from No Country for Old Men (Wendel - TLJ's partner).

 

Made a triumphant return to the movie theater this week after my last trip, seeing "Splice", went awfully.

Scott Pilgrim vs. The World- Pretty cool movie actually. I begrudgingly went with some friends, but really enjoyed it. I'm really tired of Michael Cera's awkward kid schtick, and it's once again in full force in this movie (seriously, dude has been the same character since Arrested Development), but the video game feel to the movie is really cool. Scott Pilgrim's gay roommate Wallace (played by Macaulay's brother Kieran Culkin) is the absolute star of the movie. Anyways, I'd recommend it to anyone.

The Other Guys- A lot better than I thought it would be. I've been really down on Will Ferrell lately after being a huge fan of his, especially after Land of the Lost, which I thought was mind numbingly dumb, but The Other Guys is sort of a return to form I guess. Mark Wahlberg hold his own in a comedy, which was surprising, and the supporting cast is really good. The Rock and Samuel L. don't get much screen time at all, but they're funny in their parts. Great cameo by Derek Jeter as well.

The Expendables - 7/10

Go see this movie expecting cheesy lines, poor special effects/graphics, extremely unrealistic scenes throughout, etc. and you'll enjoy it.

Terry Crews with the automatic shotgun was awesome.
Jet Li was funny.
Jason Statham is his usual badass self. He's probably the coolest person on the planet.
The Arnold/Willis scene was sort of funny too.


Also... a note to Jesse... don't you think it's funny how you illegally download movies for free and watch them on a laptop while I see them, legally, for free in the theater?
