Anatomy of a defense..The KC Chiefs..

For those of us who like X and O talk and draft talk i thought it would be fun to play the role of GM-head coach-D coordinator all in one in addressing a problem area of one the league's worst teams.

This year on defense the chiefs are a major cluster bleep. They are 30th in total defense and have given up over 40 points in their last 2 games. Central to their problems are 3 very high top 10 picks who have not played anywhere close to their draft status. Dorsey-Jackson-Johnson..

Dorsey is an active player but has not been an impact player at all. Jackson who i think was a major reach has not done much at all and Johnson is actually on the bench and not starting.

So you call the shots and tell me what your 2-3 plan would be to make this team solid on defense.

The chiefs under marty shottenheimer had perhaps the best and most consitent defensive units in the 1990s. In this decade the chiefs have been inept almost every year. They are soft and get pushed around.

So what would be your plan? The new genius GM decided to force feed the players with a patriot like 3-4. He went out and signed a bunch of older linebackers that have done nothing. Now it is your call.

What system? How could you better use those players? What areas to draft?

My approach would not be the 3-4 at all. I would have brought in a d-coordinator who had worked with a system like what greg williams runs. Not unlike what we run or the colts run. A system based on speed up front.

I think tyson jackson was a major reach taken about 25-30 picks too soon but now that i have him i think he is better suited to be a part of my 4-3 DT rotation. Same with dorsey. Both guys would thrive better with one gap responsibility in my opinion.

At middle linebacker the chiefs have 2 active but mediocre guys in demorio williams and corey mays. They are just not stout enough against the run in the 3-4. Williams is only 230 lbs and similar physically to david thornton. Williams would play on the outside in my system.

As for Derrick Johnson he is a free agent next year so a decision would have to be made on him but if he has a tude problem you might have to let him go. I would like to try him on the strong side in a system like that.

Draft priorities would be everywhere since the chiefs suck against the pass and the run but a stud 4-3 end would be the likely place to start and if there were some quality in the middle of the draft(Mcgrath, tulloch) for MLBs i would grab a couple of those guys.

Any free agent pickups would likely be for the secondary to get a guy who could step right in and play. A proven NB is nice to have as well.

 

I think most of us would have taken glen dorsey with that pick last year but tyson jackson 3rd in the whole draft? And they passed on aaron curry who could start in any defense.


Plenty of talent to pick from in the 2010 draft. Ndamukong Suh would be impossible to pass up. Great draft for a 3-4 ILB with both McClain and Spikes.

In my 4-3 scheme i would probably take Suh if he was there but since the chiefs have used the last 2 1st rd picks on linemen Mcclain would be the guy they would likely take.

 

Lendale White would be a nice addition for them. A big back to replace Johnson. They need to get more physical on offense as well.
