I agree with that old saying, offense fills seats but defense wins championships. We've had stingy defenses, we we're #5 in 2007 and barely made the playoffs...with the almighty VY at the helm. In 11 of the last 14 seasons, our defense ranked in the top 10 against the run and ranked fourth in rushing defense over that period only behind Pittsburgh, Baltimore, and San Diego. So we've had a stout defense and still can't get over the hump.

I also agree with Troy Aikman when he recently said "In the last 10 years, it's become a passer's league. You better be able to throw the football if you want to win in this league.''

Even the Steelers which has long been known as the model of a "run first" "stingy defense" smash mouth football team has made a transformation in that direction over the past few years and coincidentally they have 2 SB rings since their transformation after Cower went 14 years without one with the old philosophy. Is there no one else out there can even say "maybe this is not a coincidence"?? I'm saying that I don't think we'll start competing on a consistent elite level till we make a few adjustments ourselves and I don't see VY being the guy that can do that for us.

It's all about winning the SB! Ask the Patriots if they would rather have the perfect 16-0 regular season record or the SB win in 2007. A lot of teams have great regular season records but struggle when it comes to the playoffs, (Think about Romo he has a 27-12 win/loss record but chokes when it's important). The whole point is to win a SB! We already have a good regular season win/loss record, good defensive stats and playoff appearances...blah, blah, blah. Who cares if you can't go deep into the playoffs and come home with the big prize?!

My definition of a franchise QB is a guy who's the leader on a team that you know when it's clutch time that when your down with only 1:36 to go in the game he'll rally the troops, make the plays with conviction and confidence to carry the team on his shoulders, march down field and win the BIG, tough games for you and when he does it you're not surprised, it was too be expected. That's the kind of guy we DON'T have on this team (along with a couple good receivers you can count on too) and I think one of the main missing ingredients even when we've had very strong defenses.

So was Dan Marino, Jim Kelly, or Steve McNair not a Franchise QB?? on the Flipside was Trent Dilfer, Brad Johnson, or Jeff Hostlerter a Franchise QB??

I understand that a QB is one of the most important parts of a Franchise, but in it's sum it is NOT totality of a Super Bowl Team. It takes the whole team to rally to get to, and win a Superbowl.

I agree with your leadership statement and ability to march a team downfield, and win the big games makes a franchise QB, but the thought that if a super bowl is not achieved does not have the final say on what a franchise QB is.

Hell, if a QB stayed on the same team 10 yrs or more, then they were a franchise QB IMO.

Bottom line, if given the chance to continue to grow and get better, the kid can win us some ball games franchise QB or not.

We keep beating a dead horse with this, for every example of a Manning you can bring up a Dilfer (which has a better TD/Int ratio and QB rating than VY).

Here's what I keep saying, if you're happy winning some games and being "better than average" then let's keep doing what we've been doing and we'll keep getting what we've been getting....nothing! If you want to compete CONSISTENTLY at the next level, which is where I'd like to be, then we have to do something different and a QUALITY, CONSISTENT, QB is the cornerstone, granted not the only piece to the puzzle but I feel one that's missing here. Here is a list of the SB winners from the last 17 years and you can't tell me you don't see a common thread. Yeah sure, there's an occasional "how the hell did that happen" in there from time to time but notice the names next to the winners and especially the CONSISTENT multiple winners and then tell me an average QB will get us to the next level CONSISTENTLY. Even years some of those repeat winners didn't win the SB a lot of those guys were in the SB those years too but loss.

Super Bowl XXVII - Troy Aikman, Dallas
Super Bowl XXVIII - Troy Aikman, Dallas
Super Bowl XXIX - Steve Young, San Francisco
Super Bowl XXX - Troy Aikman, Dallas
Super Bowl XXXI - Bret Favre, Green Bay
Super Bowl XXXII - John Elway, Denver
Super Bowl XXXIII - John Elway, Denver
Super Bowl XXXIV - Kurt Warner, St. Louis
Super Bowl XXXV - Trent Dilfer, Baltimore Ravens
Super Bowl XXXVI - Tom Brady, New England
Super Bowl XXXVII - Brad Johnson, Tampa Bay
Super Bowl XXXVIII - Tom Brady, New England
Super Bowl XXXIX - Tom Brady, New England
Super Bowl XL - Ben Roethlisberger, Pittsburgh
Super Bowl XLI - Peyton Manning, Indianapolis
Super Bowl XLII -Eli Manning, New York Giants
Super Bowl XLIII -Ben Roethlisberger, Pittsburgh

And so far he's right, that's about all there is to know about VY, what he did in that one game in college. A lot of guys are stars in college but it doesn't always translate to the NFL. All the VY lovers just keep hanging onto how "awesome" he WAS in college but that was then this is now and he's not in college anymore.

    hey

Few more games, and i will be a believer!! VY plays just like these first "6"

(good & WiN) games, and we won't need to use a first round pick on QB. We can go 'D' in the first rd, 2nd, 3rd & so on. BUILD THE DEFENSE!!!;)

I'll give him credit, that was a beautiful pass. Let's see if he can start doing that CONSISTENTLY. Plus I've never argued about his athletic and physical abilities it's his ability to read defenses and make decisions on the fly when things aren't going as scripted like they have the past two weeks and they probably will go this week against the Bills. Let's see when we get some stiffer competition how he reacts "mentally" when things aren't going his way. That's what I'm waiting for before I start believing he's a "new man".
