:ha: this $#!t is funny... you all up in here busting my balls...
that's terrific. Lumberg needs you to come in Sunday to get those tps reports. :grrhee: Time for a self-esteem check there buddy if you want to compare paychecks.
I resumed working on a degree in Social & Behavioral Sciences. Between school, parenting, marriage, and roaming off to Titans games I'm a little busy for that. Besides, my wife and I have a business to run, so, you know how it goes... or maybe you don't, because you work for the man rubber stamping other peoples paychecks. Seriously, I'm just busting balls back at you. I was just screwing around with you about the flyweight stuff. I didn't know you were that sensitive about it. But for real, just admit you really have no idea what the hell kerning actually is because you don't actually have formal training as you are self-taught.

I'm not that sensative about it. Was just amazed at how touchy you were and the extremes you took to take up for someone else.

I'm amazed at the extremes you went to evidence that in the realm of graphic arts you have no idea what you're talking about. I ran his name through a google search. You opened up paintbrush, saved and uploaded files. Anyways, I was just trying to show you that he's an authority on the subject and you are just a guy who used to work in a warehouse.

It's like if you met Jeff Fisher and started going on about how our defense is all wrong as a 4-3 and if he had a lick sense he's convert to 3-4. That's how you sound trying to tell the guy who works professionally in the field, holds degrees and actually teaches it... You sound ridiculous, that's all, especially to people like me that don't know anything about graphic design.

That's the whole point. It's just about who's more credible because most of us haven't any idea. Me though... I'm just bored... If I'm not going to screw with you it would be someone else in some other thread. I just like to type.

I'm giving this one last shot. Try to keep an open mind as you read it.

If someone looks at "tracking" as only the plural of "kerning", they don't do this for a living because it's much more than that. In almost every instance, display type requires both. You may want to tighten (or open) the spacing between characters in a headline overall so you adjust the tracking but individual letter pairs may still appear to have uneven negative space between them (though all tracked the same amount) due to the positive shape of the letterforms. That's where kerning comes in and it has to be done between individual pairs of characters.

Next time you are in a type program, type in a word like "VAST". You can track it tighter or more open but the letters "V" and "A" will always look tighter than the other spaces in the word because of the shapes of the two letters. In order for it to appear evenly spaced, you have to kern between the two.

That's why the two terms mean two totally different things.

So when I tell a student that the tracking of a headline looks a little too open, it means something totally different than when I tell them a headline needs kerning. If I tell them it needs kerning, they are going to look at individual pairs of letters they need to adjust.

But again, I'm also a guy that probably has a better education in design than Jeff does. And I'm possibly even better at the art. Who knows? But sure... use a past job to somehow discredit my knowledge of art. Again, be fair rather than taking up for someone just to win message board brownie points- it's not a good look.
For the record- Me. Just a guy that used to work in a warehouse just beat out quite a few professional designers for a job with MTSU.

but keep discrediting me somehow. :) Maybe if I mod a forum, you'll agree?

I'm still right as to what I was referring to. We were just on different pages. (Jeff and I)
In almost every form of learning today, we refer to the space between 2 characters kerning. That's what I did.

IMO- the kerning is off. Still. The tracking may be fine, but the kerning is still off.

And Jeff- you explained it well. I understand what you were saying- you were referring to the entire word- but from the get-go I was not. Even if it were just fixing the kerning between the '.' and the 'c', it'd help. I actually think that's what throws it off.

You know Gloat, I had no idea you were such an educated and accomplished professional designer. I thought your arrogance was funny so I was just playing a lighthearted game of "who the hell are you?" If there is such a thing as TitanJeff brownie points I promise you that they are worthless. I didn't realize that bringing up the fact that you work outside the field of design would fracture your ego, in other words, what I'm trying to say is that I wasn't trying to attack you personally. That wasn't my intent. I was just getting involved in the drama for fun. I'm not getting away with anything, and if I was, I'm sorry that I offended you. I was just trying to stir the pot. That was selfish of me to get a giggle at your expense on the internet.
