In an interview with British newspaper The Times, Activision Blizzard CEO Robert Kotick has threatened to drop support for both the PlayStation 3 and the PSP as early as 2010. He points out to the fact that his company will be forced to so because business is business; the Xbox 360 and Wii are selling better than the PlayStation 3, giving better returns on investment.

"I'm getting concerned about Sony; the PlayStation 3 is losing a bit of momentum and they don't make it easy for me to support the platform. It's expensive to develop for the console, and the Wii and the Xbox are just selling better. Games generate a better return on invested capital on the Xbox than on the PlayStation," Kotick says.

"They have to cut the price, because if they don't, the attach rates [the number of games each console owner buys] are likely to slow. If we are being realistic, we might have to stop supporting Sony."

When the newspaper asked when, Kotick said: "When we look at 2010 and 2011, we might want to consider if we support the console — and the PSP [portable] too."

what you think? Spiderman, Tony Hawk and Call Of Duty would be a few games that Sony would not get.

Odd. Must be more the game sales than the actual console. That and the difficulty to make games for it in general.

    Bluff.

Last quarterly or annually report (one of them) the playstation brand PS2/PS3/PSP brought in over 50% of Activisions profits.
They're not going to stop, everyone knows it.

I was about to say, talk about corporate suicide. Not a very good bluff.

Everyone knows it except the guy in charge, I guess. No reason to bluff, really.

so he'd rather make no money by not making the games for the ps3 than make the money while continuing to support the system?

    BRILLIANT

He drops support for the PS3. Sony denies them support for PS2/PSP and they half their profits.

Plus, the 'oh we might drop support by 2010/11' is the bluff part. Unless he expects the PS3 to stay the same price in 2 years time, he's just talking out his rear end to pressure Sony to drop the price (which consumers want anyway).

PS4 won't be out til 2015 at the earliest.

    PS2 still sells fairly well.
