The welterweight division in boxing right now is better than it has ever been. Ever. Heavyweights are dull, but they always have been minus Mike Tyson.

Dude, you can be a fan of boxing and MMA.

Politics and people like Don King have ruined boxing over the years but a great fight will always be a draw no matter what.

I thought it was a terrible decision.Clottey won the fight.

Bet on Clottey, should have known better if the fight went to the cards. I've always been a downer on Cotto; I find it nauseating that people actually thought he could take Mayweather a year or so back. Eugck...

Do we have the round by round punch stats? I hate total fight punch stats because fights are not scored that way.

I didn't see the fight but if cotto threw 9 more punches per round and scored a knockdown it can't be that outrageous a decision. A guy from count8 thought cotto won 115-111 and a guy from bleacher report thought cotto won 114-113. Again i didn't see the fight and had no dog in this hunt.

I think mosely's demolition of margarito pretty much tells us the quality of the top welterweights. Cotto and margarito were way over rated and not of the same ilk as trindad-dlh-mosley who were not the same caiber as leonard-hearns-duran-benitez. So it is hard for me to care.

I'd say the lightweights or feathers is the most facinating division in boxing, not the welters. Maybe when Mayweather was hanging in the division, and Cotto and Margarito hadn't been exposed as overrated. I'm not blown away by the likes of Berto, Alvarez, etc as prospects.

Meanwhile, the lightweight division has J.M. Marquez, Guzman, J. Diaz, R. Reyes, Valero (if he ever comes stateside, he could be exciting), Casamoyer, etc. Some nice prospects in Prescot, A. Peterson, and Antillion just to name a few round up an interesting division.

Boxing is as alive as ever, you just have to know where to look IMO.

That's the problem. Punching more should NEVER win you a fight. Landing more should. This is why people actually thought Oscar De La Hoya/Mayweather was close- because even though Mayweather landed more punches and threw less, avoided most of DLH's punches, and basically made him look like a child... since he "pressed the fight" swinging wildly and inaccurately, - he should have won?

The 115-111 was the score that blew people's mind. Even if Cotto did win- he didn't win by nearly that much. That's what Kellerman said also- it's not so much that they gave Cotto the fight, but the score 115-111 it shows that the judge wasn't even watching it.

As for saying those guys are no better?

Paul Williams. Manny Pacquiao. Floyd Mayweather. Juan Manuel Marquez. Joshua Clottey. Shane Mosely. Miguel Cotto.

No welterweight group in boxing history can contend with that. I'm a big SRL fan, but nope. Duran was a joke and would get it handed to him by Ricky Hatton even.

Sorry, Leonard, Duran, Benitez, Pryor, Hearns, etc era was better IMO. Did this fool just say Duran was a joke...? :ha: I dunno if I can follow your logic there Gloat.

Nah, but the welterweight division right now is good, about as good as one could hope. I wouldn't put Marquez in the welter-division because he had (now tentatively canceled) a catch-weight fight with Mayweather in the division. He's still a lightweight essentially.

Ok, true @ Marquez. But Duran was never anything special to me. Seems like the type of fighter that would only have been good in that era. If placed with today's talent, he'd get murdered. Again- kind of a Ricky Hatton type.

That is moronic! Duran beat leonard in his absolute prime. He won the middle weight title at age 37 over the same guy that KO's tommy hearns. He is maybe the 2nd best fighter pound per pound ever and the best lightweight ever.

We don't have to guess what duran vs hatton would be like we saw hatton fight the modern day duran and get knocked the f**k out!

Duran was a far better boxer than hatton and had a far superior chin. Gloat learn your boxing dude.

Simple question could hatton have gone a tough 15 against marvin hagler? Duran did!

I know my boxing, which is why I know that Duran was vastly overrated. Just because he beat a few good fighters, means nothing. Styles make fights. So when you say he beat this guy that beat this other guy- it holds no weight.
Juan Manuel beat Pacquiao (though was robbed) and then turned around to be beaten (but awarded) by a complete nobody.
