As some of you may know, Clottey is one of my favorite boxers. If you saw the fight last night, you witnessed a bit of why.
He practically dominated Miguel Cotto for 8 out of 12 rounds- but due to boxing being boxing, he still lost on the judge's score-cards. Cotto is too much of a superstar and he had the crowd behind him- roaring with every punch he delivered to Clottey's... gloves.

Boxing makes me sick sometimes. Clottey continues to show he's up there and can fight with any welterweight right now, and beat many of the best- yet he gets robbed by the judges every time. Pathetic.

A little of the fight. Note- the cut on Cotto's eye was caused by a clash of heads, not punches.

Cotto threw 101 more punches (723), Clottey landed 43 more punches (222). Clottey also landed 44 more power punches.

Where do they find these judges, anyway?

    Ehhhh...

Personally I thought clotty won too but could he kept taking his foot off the pedal in the last part of the fight. He kept connecting with that right hand but went away from it and allowed himself to get caught in the corner. But overall, great fight. The fact that both overcame injuries to still finish the fight and finish strong impressed. Fights like that are the reason I cannot be swayed to MMA.

The fact that the heavyweight division is meaningless and the good lightweights are all retiring is why boxing is dead.

I saw the fight and I'll say this much; Cotto can go 20 rounds he's built for boxing, but he doesn't optimize on open opportunities. Cotto seems to miss a lot of potential knock out hits. Whereas Clottey will try taking your head off only to leave him self vulnerable to a devastating hit. Both guys had their moments last night, but neither really comes off as a Pacquiao figure with unique qualities. Any other two welterweight's fighting last nights fight would have made for a better showing but not necessarily as close of a match up. I would have been mad though if I was charged $50 for a PPV, glad it was on HBO.

How'd I know lame MMA would come up? If I liked watching guys in their underwear roll around and dry hump, I'd get a season of Queer as Folk on dvd.

Yea that's exactly what it is.

Like it or not UFC was what boxing was 10 years ago and boxing is dead. The first I heard of this fight was this thread. Not only would that never happen with UFC but it never would have happened when boxing was in it's prime.

I haven't heard of a MMA fight being hyped since Rampage and Liddell.

Has anything happened since then? This wasn't even a pay per view fight. So if you don't follow boxing, you probably wouldn't have known about it. Hell, I don't expect casual fans to really know much about Clottey anyway.

Lots has happened since then. Franklin/Silva, the main event of UFC 99, had a hell of a fight. But you'll hear a ton about UFC 100, gonna be huge.

And I did follow boxing, I was a big fan back in the day but the heavyweight division evaporated, and to me, light weights can't sustain the sport especially when the top light weights are all retiring. Meanwhile UFC is going to keep growing and eventually be what boxing was. Speaking as someone who followed UFC back in the earliest of days I can say that it's popularity has multiplied by at least 10.
