I never took the pills and ended up absolutely exhausted. I would pass out in the middle of class, find myself unconscious on the sidewalk in front of my apartment, and in a couple very embarassing dinners fall asleep in my food. Things got worse and I spent a year and a half in and out of the hospital.

The insomnia had obviously come from a much bigger problem then simply not being able to sleep. Had I taken the pills things might not have gotten so bad, but then again who knows. I still to this day refuse to take sleeping pills for fear of not waking up.

I have learned a couple of tips that help me:

SUN! Sounds funny, but the more time I'm outside in the sun the easier it is for my body to shut down at night when I'm inside and the sun is down.

Open window. Even in the winter I leave my window open. Fresh air is relaxing to me, as are the sounds outside. (even though they often compete with my tv/radio/computer etc)

Fresh sheets. I change sheets every other day. Keeps them fresh and smooth, helping my body relax at night. (but then I'm a search-for-the-cold-spots kind of girl)

Wow...people actually fall asleep in their food. I thought that was just Hollywood fiction.

Reading that, I am glad (blessed?) I have nothing wrong with me.

Lust for me does that. :grrhee:

I swear everytime I read CPAP it looks like CRAP.

So sleep apnea is you stop breathing in your sleep? (And I assume you wake up from it, correct?)

What does the CPAP machine do?

Not always IN the food... but I did throw a nice dinner party for my friends only to find my face covered with marinara and noodles. The looks on their faces were absolutely PRICELESS! lol

You don't wake up to a cognitive state.Do I ever anyway? The problem is that you can stop breathing more than 10 times per hour.Although you don't actually wake up your brain doesn't drop into the deep sleep required to recuperate and heal properly.

It affects your overall energy levels and might lead to a stroke if untreated.

The machine gives you slightly pressurised air to breathe as you sleep which keeps you nose/throat open.

Sleep apnea is some bad stuff. That's what killed Reggie White.
But you got nothing to worry about...

Exactly. You'll notice also, that with many CPAP machines, you are unable to breathe through your mouth. This stops snoring altogether. When I did the sleep study at the University of TN, I was stopping breathing about 10 times more than folks with light to moderate sleep apnea.

I'm going this Sunday to do my sleep study. I've never been so excited about a medical test. I just hope I can fall asleep.

Good luck with the test. They actually prescribed me ambien to make sure I fell asleep and it worked out fine.
