I thought we got rid of McNair and Volek in the same offseason.

If his agent says "screw that" after his client gets offered 9 million a year over a week before free agency starts, then Haynesworth needs to be looking for a new one. See the thing is, Haynesworth wants 70-80 million, and we want to give around 55 million. So it wouldn't make much sense to start just a little less than what we will give. At least that's the way I see it.

*My numbers are nothing I've heard, just rough guesses. But I'd say the differences are about right.

    I have to say something...

Do you have ANY idea what you're talking about?

We have NO PLAYER ON THE ROSTER WHO COULD PLAY NOSE GUARD IN A 3-4....except AH. Oops...

Tony Brown is a 3 technique DT...meaning he's the guy trying to beat the OG while the BIG DT (read AH) gets double teamed by the OC and OG. No AH means the DL doesn't need to double either of them...allowing the OC to help out on whichever DT is causing more problems...if at all. It also means KVB won't be single blocked often...now HE'LL get doubled alot when the offense needs to. So where is our pass rush???

Next you will point to the 4.5 sacks gotten by our rookies without AH. Did you notice the Steelers have the WORST OL in the NFL? You want to be a SB contending team, you had better have a pass rush that can attack Peyton Manning and Brady or spend a lot of time hoping someone else knocks them off for us and we have the luxury of playing the Steelers. Of course we'll need to beat one more good team without a pass rush...but never mind all that.

I like playing Madden, but there is a reason teams don't arbitrarily flip between 5 different defenses...because it hurts there reads and execution. Sure, a few teams play hybrid type defenses...but even those are primarily one D (like a 3-4) that will go to a 4-3 look on passing downs. We will NOT be playing much if any 3-4 formations. Cecil said he wants to just keep things going as they are.

Problem is, without AH, things will change BIG TIME! Ever notice that our D got stupendously better when 2 things happened? They got rid of Lamont I can't play Safety Thompson...and more importantly...AH became an elite DT. You might have noticed that the Tampa Bay D was excellent year in and year out primarily because of Warren Sapp. That one dominant DT makes a HUGE difference! Look at the best D's...Steelers have Hampton, Ravens have Ngata. These guys can't be single blocked. If you remeber our game against the Jets...Kris Jenkins practically single handedly wrecked our dominant run attack because Mawae AND either OG couldn't stop him!

Who is this vet you think we can sign who give us similar results? And by results I hope you DONT mean stats since AH was MUCH MORE than his own stats!

There are ONLY 2 real first rnd DT prospects and NEITHER will probably be there when we pick. And even still, only Raji has the size we need as Jerry is slightly undersized and has a similar game to TBrown and Jason Jones. Only other guy I can think of would be Brace in rnd 2 (Raji's teammate) who is like 330...but much more of a run stuffer. Drafting DE's is all well and nice, but we can only play one guy opposite KVB at a time and unless there is a miracle and either Brown, Orakpo or Maybin falls to us...there is no blue chip pass rusher we can get in rnd 1.

And your last comment I hope is based on sleep deprivation...none of the experts would tell us that Matthews is a good fit for us because they have him going earlier??? HUH?

    Well...

We COULD have afforded Kearse...but due to Floyd's (mis)management of the cap, we couldn't afford his franchise tag...so we had no leverage. I think the Titans should have tagged him and then traded him for less than 2 firsts...(probably a first and maybe a mid rnd pick) but even if it was for a 2nd rnd pick, it's a LOT better than nothing!!!

He's right. This was a dumb move by MR....and only way it doesn't come back to haunt us is IF we can keep our D dominant and AH doesn't go to a team that beats us!

    Well...

While this is a very good post, I disagree on a few things. I DO think the Titans will give AH there best offer on the 25th or 26th. They've been saying things are slow until right before free agency when things get moving. Meaning...they low ball everyone and see who bites. And then they make their best offers when they need to. Since we can't tag AH, no need to make him their best offer now...though I seriously disagree with the strategy. While we are waiting to make our best offer, the price of the highest paid defensive player keeps lurching up...now to unreasonable heights. So now a 12mil/yr offer doesn't sound so high when there are players getting 16+/yr.

But mainly I disagree with your post in that the really good players aren't getting signed. Both the Raiders and Panthers faced serious problems having each 2 elite players to deal with. In the Panthers case, they signed Gross so they could tag (and trade?) Peppers. The Raiders signed BOTH Lechler and Asomugha. The Bucs re-signed Ryan Sims. The Ravens tagged Suggs. The Texans kept Dunta Robinson. The top players are getting re-signed to crazy deals or getting tagged.

This is why letting AH play his way out of getting tagged for a easy to fill incentives was a BAD move.

On the flip side, the teams in cap trouble will dump some very good players into the class...thankfully...but it is likely we will have to spend our money and first rnd pick on something other than DT if AH leaves.

Of course, I could see the Titans re-signing Drew Bennett and grabbing Marvin Harrison perhaps...

Then again, how will this crazy money impact negotiations with Kerry Collins. $31mil in cap space sounded a lot bigger when you're talking about a player getting 12mil...not 16.6!

    Um...

And who would you sign on this list? Grady Jackson for a year? Shaun Cody? BTW, Ryan Sims re-signed with Tampa so take him off your list!

    Well...

They could have offered him other incentives that wouldn't allow him out of the tag. If he ends up holding out after the Titans made their best offer...it would be HIS loss. He could hold out, but he wouldn't get out of us having his rights and he wouldn't want that to drag on too long considering he has enough baggage going with him if he wanted to go somewhere else.

I don't understand why the Titans didn't get a deal done with him late in the season. He proved he's as good as ANY DT in the league and that it wasn't a one year fluke the previous season. At that point, offering him and 4 yr 36mil contract completely guaranteed wouldn't have been bad at all...especially if certain incentives NOT easily reached kicked in additional year(s).
