Gut what are you talking about? Backups unknown? Ford-ball-hayes played about as many snaps combined as a frontline starting DE. Combined they had 67 tackles 12.5 sacks, 4 forced fumbles 1 int and 1 fumble recovery. Those are jared allen type numbers!

Ford was basically a red shirt rookie after sitting out last year with an injury and he had 7 sacks. Hayes was a rookie whom the coaches gush about in terms of potential. Ball is a mid career guy who just came into his own. You want to cut one of those guys?

Your comment about KVB makes no sense at all either. Here is a guy who is the definition of reliable. Plays more downs than any d-lineman in the league. He gets one bad injury and injury that is not career threatening and now he is injury prone?

The only reason i could think of that we would want to draft a DE is if we wanted to replace kearse with a bigger kevin carter guy to bolster our run defense in the event we lose AH.

If we lose AH another DT is a possibility but typically late first round is a bad value spot for DTs because all the good ones get gobbled up earlier. Waiting into the 2nd or later rounds for a good one might be a better idea. For the most part the best pass rushing DEs get gobbled up early as well and the ones who make it into the late first round aren't really much of a better option than guys later as well.

I agree with Tide that we really aren't in terrible shape at DE even without KVB and Kearse down the road. The young guys really look like they have some serious potential. Ask the Steelers about Hayes and Ford and if they can play. Obviously we need to address adding some depth in the near future. If a guy like Robert Ayers is sitting there in the 2nd round we would be silly not to take him. It also makes some difference if Ball re-signs.

I'd have a hard time passing on Harvin if he is sitting there. We need play makers. Unless he simply looks terrible running routes or can't catch the ball I'd think the Titans could find some room for him in our offense and although he obviously isn't a true RB there is no reason he can't take a pitch every now and then. He could be similar to Reggie Bush IMO as a RB. I just wouldn't give him many carries.

KVB's contract runs out after 2009. The Titans are going to have to extend him this season, or let him hit FA and lose him, or franchise him.

Ford signed a 4-year deal in 2007, so he's got 2 more years, and I think he'll take over for Jevon, but Ball is a FA, Jevon has one more year. Basically, we can be down two starters in a year, and that's not considering injury. Looking at it differently, I see us as having one starter at DE and four rotational guys. KVB, and everybody else.

I feel great about our group, but nothing is really solid yet. We got a bunch of guys, but for only a short-term period of time.

    Tide, tide, tide...

Unkown...as in it's unkown if these guys will turn into legitimate pass rushers who can start or remain backup players who can give you some rush here and there.

KVB and Kearse are not gonna be here forever and they make decent change. Who's gonna replace them or are you gonna shell out gigantic bucks to keep KVB? Even if you did, we don't know IF we have a legit heir for Kearse...and I'd open that side up to an open competition. 3.5 sacks out of Kearse is not really cutting it!

But perhaps the bigger point you missed was...these guys can rush the passer as effectively as they did because AH is causing so many problems. Take him out of the equation and allow teams to double KVB and we'll see who can play. Hence, my point that if AH isn't re-signed, we may need to upgrade our DE pass rush. If you have 4 DE's and none of them show you they have 10+ sack capability...you need to keep adding talent and let them compete. And there is a very real possibility we don't keep KVB past his current contract...so we may need an heir for one side even if you think one of our current backups can hold down one side.

LOL...where did I say he was injury PRONE??? And I'm curious how you KNOW he plays more downs than any other DE in the league? How many downs did he play last year...?

Did we lose vs Baltimore because our run D or our pass D failed? They couldn't run on us...so why would we need a big run stuffer instead of Kearse...who was quite good against the run actually?

    First round pick
    LB James Laurenites
    WR Jeremy Maclin
DT Peria Jerry (what a cruel joke to give a guy a last name for a first name and a first name for a last name).
    CB DJ Moore

As usual you take the best available guy and fill in needs with the rest of the picks.

the only reason i wouldn't take peria jerry is because he'll be 25 in august. that's two years younger than haynesworth will be.....

Coulda been wrong about Dave Ball

Per Rotoworld, Dave Ball is under contract next year at $620,000. I missed that somehow. Sorry, guys. I've been saying I thought he was a FA. But the flipside is he will need back surgery this offseason. There's speculation Ball's career may be in jeopardy. So there could be some need there. Since he's under contract and depending how his back surgery goes, we might consider Ball a potential trade candidate as well. He might be worth a 4th or 5th rounder (to a team like Detroit, say) after last season.

In the end, though, probably just better to keep him around and see how it goes. Only better values we've had recently at DE were KVB that first year he played for $480,000 and provided 12 sacks, and Jacob Ford this year, where he probably made $380,000 or so, and gave us 7 sacks.

    Um...huh?

First off, Haynesworth will be 28 next august...so Jerry would be 3 years younger.

Second, who cares...he's still 2-3 years from his athletic prime and can be a viable player for 7-9 years. These are the most important years for a DT in general. Few DT's play well past 32...and if you're average draftee is 22, you're splitting hairs over 1 or 2 years...and that's IF he's that good and IF he doesn't get hurt and IF....blah blah blah.

I expect Jerry to be gone anyway which would make this point moot...but you get the point.

Agreed, Gut. Another argument is Jerry is more developed than the other DT prospects and may therefore be more "pro-ready" as a result.
