Whatever you say biboy. I am glad you think a good WR wouldn't have helped your team get past the loser tag in the playoffs. I guess next season when AH is on another team and the titans have 20 million in cap space left "just in case somebody gets hurt mid-season", you will be happy. That is why the titans will never win the Super Bowl and are considered losers through out the league.

I'll admit I'm not sure what an NFL team's balance sheet and financial statements looks like.

I always assumed that cap figures were somewhat an indicator of how much the owners had to spend on player expenditures. For instance, if an owner spends $20 million below the cap, I figured it was reasonable to say the owner was cheap, or more accurately did not spend the full allotment allowed for player expenses.

I assume there is an adjustment too for how the signing bonus effects each year's cap.

I could be way off, and I'd be curious to know exactly how it works either way.

And there is certainly strategy to not maximizing the cap, in order to re-sign players and make other moves in the future, as you previously said. I don't think 2008 was a case of Bud being cheap.

I will use simple numbers for you. If a team has a cap of 105 million to spend on players. And said team has 15 million of unused money to spend "later". And said team has 53 teams under contract. Now some of those players are making the minimum sitting on the practice squad. Some of those players are making 5 to 10 million a year. (Think over paying for Vince.) Now if you pocket $15 million of $105 million for "emergencies" you are not using over 10% of your cap. Now true you will need to keep some money in case something happens but how many top tier players that would want big money are sitting at the house in Oct. waiting for a phone call. Most of what you are finding mid-season are injury prone ex-starters that are mad that people aren't beating down their door and guys that got cut in training camp. Only a very few high level players are playing the money game by mid-season. So if Kearse goes down you aren't picking up some guy off the street and giving him a $12 mil/4 year contract. You are more likely getting some guy for $3 mil/ 2 year contract. Or even just promoting some minimum wage guy from the practice squad and signing some street FA to fill his spot on the practice squad. So yes if your team has $20 mil left come October, your team is either stupid or cheap.

Overalls, it's about building a quality core while maintaining ability for retention. It's not about spending all your checking balance then turning a notch up in the visa. Spending to the limit mortgages the future. Although I agree a solid wr would help our team tremendously, that position, strangely isn't a focus of our offense and doesn't command the biggest money from the front office. The Titans need to luck out and draft a real quality guy or develop someone they have. The Titans are not interested in getting in a bidding war to get an overvalued fa. If they can add someone who can contribute at the right price, it's a fit, but really, what "big time" fa wr wants to play for a team that runs the ball more than almost anyone?

It wouldn't shock me to see Marvin Harrison end up here. Otherwise, we need to sit back and wait for the Titans to draft the next Reggie Wayne or T.J. Houshmandzadeh.

For the most part, I trust Reinfeldt, so I'll assume anyone who has contributed will be re-signed barring

    A) Further evaluation revealing that such player(s) have lost some of their game and regressed.

    B) A lapse in competence.

There is no other reason the Titans wouldn't sign any available player they wanted. The salary cap is meaningless now, and will be gone before the 2010 season. It doesn't matter if we backload contracts. In fact, I fully expect it.

Someone mentioned Bud pocketing some cheddar over the last few years. All the better. Revenue sharing will still exist in some form, and this would actually put Adams ahead of the game, making his available resources competitive with the top in the league.

I'm sure if the Titans had or found a player they HAD to HAVE, they wouldn't mind breaking the bank for such player. Personally, I'm glad the Titans didn't do like Jacksonville last offseason, and break the bank for Jerry Porter and Drayton Florence, or like Oakland, and pay far out the *** for Hall. Spending money doesn't necessarily equal success, but I am comfortable that the Titans have saved enough money that they could win pretty much any bidding war for any player THEY felt they HAD to HAVE. I stress those words because THEY have been excellent talent evaluators over the last couple years, and I am comfortable that any big signing we would have would be integral pieces for getting the Titans a Superbowl win, I.E. a need, and not dead weight, I.E. Porter, Florence, and Hall.

NFL CAP is a HARD CAP. There is also a HARD Floor that teams must spend. pretty sure it is 95% of the CAP

MR sits on any CAP money most it can be is 5% or about 6m not 10-15 or any other number. If there was not a CAP floor the Bidwells would only have undrafted rookies on their roster and pocted the 100m difference

i may be wrong but just because a team has the option to spend so many millions for their roster doesn't mean they are suppose to go out and have a shopping spree with all the allowed money. look how far we are under on cap space and look at where we ended up as far as wins for the season.
