how is determining which team is better on the field head-to-head not more fair than just polling writers and coaches and ranking them?
    you, sir, are crazy.

Easy to say, hard to do in practice. How do you determine those 8 playoff teams?

The usual answer I here is "the 6 big conference winners and two at-large".

How does that work in practice this season? What is Missouri, Alabama, and Virginia Tech win Saturday?

Our 8 team playoff would give us (current rankings):
    #1) Alabama - SEC
    #5) USC - Pac10
    #6) Penn State - Big10
    #13) Cinci - Big East
    #19) Missouri- Big12
    Unranked) Virginia Tech - ACC

Then who are the two at-large teams? Texas over Texas Tech (that beat them)? Undefeated Utah, do they get in? A 2-loss Oklahoma or Florida left out? Undefeated Boise State? 2-loss Ohio State?

You only get to choose 2, and anyway you decide it will leave controversy.

Have to be blind to not see that a sloppy 8-team playoff will create as much controversy, and provide as much of a "mythical" national championship as the BCS.

    bull****.

if you beat a team straight up, they don't deserve to advance.

i think most people would admit that the patriots were better than the giants last year, but the giants beat them when it mattered.
in you're scenario, oklahoma and florida would have to "eat it." no team with two losses deserves a national title, same with ohio state.

utah and boise state can join a bcs conference and then we'll talk.

that leaves the two teams that would deserve it the most anyway, the highest ranked bcs teams, texas and texas tech.

    not that hard.

there will always be gripes. hell, people complain that team X got in over team Y in college basketball when there are 65 teams!

No idea what you're talking about.

There would never be a situation where there was an 8-team undefeated college playoff. So in every situation, a team would have "advanced" to the playoffs with a loss.

So you put in Texas and Texas Tech, while two undefeated teams don't make it? Add to that a playoff where Virginia Tech is CLEARLY not among the top8 teams in the country. What if Utah beats Florida by 30. I would say an argument could be made that the best team in the country didn't even make the playoffs. And for an undefeated team to be passed over, when a crappy ACC champion makes it? See- I've already pointed out how flawed a sloppy playoff system would work. And these same gripes would come up every season.

I just think there are few designs that allow for a "true" on-the-field test for a college national champion. We are talking about fairly narrowing down the best 8 of 118 division schools.

I think the first step in that direction is to create a conference championship game for every conference. That should be the the FIRST ROUND of any future college playoff system.

all of these what ifs. everything is having to fall in your favor for your examples to work.

every single underdog would have to win the conference championship games. wac teams would have to beat top five teams by 30.

if utah and boise state want to be seen on the same level as USC, Texas and Tech Tech, they should play the same level of competition.

utah and boise state have played a combined 3 teams currently in the top 25. texas tech played 4 in the last five weeks.

Not really. It will happen every season. Every season the debate will switch from who plays in the BCS championship, to did the "best" teams make the playoff.

Want me to change the scenario.. fine!

    Conference championship winners:
    #)4 Florida
    #2) Oklahoma
    #5) USC
    #6) Penn State
    #18) Boston College
    #13) Cincinnati

And two at-large teams. Remember you can ONLY pick two: 1-loss: Alabama, Texas, Texas Tech. Undefeated: Utah, Boise State

Those conference winners are based on Vegas lines.

Still, the system (which you think I set up in only 1 strict set of examples) still fails to remove controversy. I guarantee a scenario like this will play out in at least 90% of seasons. Almost every year there will be teams with the same record in the 7th-10th spot. Guess you are ok with the polls deciding the At-large teams, but you ***** when they are the tie-breaker for the BCS championship?

Ignorance is bliss. If you believe any 8-team playoff system provides college football bliss.... well......

alabama and texas tech. alabama is the highest ranked and texas tech beat texas.

head-to-head competition is looked at first. texas tech beat texas, so texas should not advance(you know, like a playoff)

pretty much. and i'd have no problem with a 12 team playoff, just to ensure the best teams do get in.

plus, a playoff would eliminate the dead four weeks between the conference championship games the bcs games. more money for that, and we all know college football is all about money.

Why not just take the top 8 teams in the BCS poll to a playoff? Who's gonna complain about that? This way, you eliminate teams like VT, BC, and Cincy from getting in by simply winning their sub-par conferences. Sure, the #9 team will complain, but do you really think Boise State could win three strait against top 8 competition? Me neither.

If we go to an 8-team playoff under the current college format, this would get my vote.

I still don't find it "fair". But I'd rather see a playoff like this until they fix the conference format.
