Ideally your OL are equally adept at both run blocking and pass protection. But that usually isn't the case. I don't understand why the OL doesn't do some situational substitution. Either have a mauler who comes in for running situations or a guy who is more of a pass protection specialist on obvious passing downs. The defense brings in its NASCAR packages on 3rd and long....why doesn't the offense do a similar substitution to better handle the quicker defense.

I've heard people say that it would tip your hand as to what play you might be calling. Well if it's 3rd and 15 then 95% of the time you are throwing the ball....so why not put a more mobile OL in the game who is better at pass pro and who can get out on a screen or up field on a draw.

    Random offseason thought...

Good thoughts, also other teams know the minute we take Henry out on 3rd down we are passing regardless of yards needed

Part of the problem is roster size limitations. Most teams only carry about 7 OL on game day, 8 at most. You definitely don't have enough for a full OL change, and it could really screw your offense if for instance you had two right tackles - one for pass pro and another for run blocking - and one of them gets hurt. I still don't hate the idea of situational substitutions though.

Like there is absolutely no reason to leave a right tackle in who's a liability in pass rush when you're playing from behind and passing for the entire 4th quarter. Just make sure you have one of the backups who's at least marginally better at pass pro.

Obviously the titans are pretty much 50/50 pass/rush, but most teams backups wouldnt be better at pass pro than rush. Or they'd be starting right, given the 70/30 pass/rush ratio most teams have?
