The exact reason Tannehill was brought in was to light a fire under Mariota.

If he doesn't play well by week 4- he's gone. Granted- Tannehill has a high liklihood of getting hurt, so MM could end up being a hero by season's end if he actually gets his sh*t together.

There have been other teams with good defenses and run games, even better than ours, whose QBs haven't won as often as Mary.

We all know Mariota doesn't light up the box score often. But he's as clutch as they come and i feel like we have a chance to beat any team when he plays. That's what makes him valuable over guys like Cousins who put up big numbers but don't lead their teams to wins in big games.

Hey I’m just glad we have two. Didn’t it suck as a fan to watch games when Marcus was hurt ? We got it covered now barring tragedy.

With Tannehil we have one of the best backups in the league. That's a very good thing.

I USED to be very high on Mariota. I went in to last season thinking "with this new coaching staff he is gonna excel." But he did not, it was more of the same.

Do I think Mariota still has a high "ceiling"? Yes
Do I have high expectations? No
Would I be suprised if he excelled in 2019, only mildly.
My actual expectations are, more mediocre, inconsistent play. (sadly)

    My Mariota analysis:
He is far to inconsistent. When he is good, he is AMAZINGLY good, but when he is not, he is really bad, and he is bad too often.

He seems to be a natural clutch player, playing MUCH better late in the game, with the game on the line (see 2017 season, last game of the regular season vs jaguars, playoff game vs KC, etc.

    But...
He also seems to play badly in the first quarter WAY too often, digging the team into a hole. Not always, but WAY too often.

His running ability is a huge asset, makes defenses alter to accomodate it.
It also increases the chance of injury.

He seems to have "happy feet" far too often,, shuffling his feet before throws, causing him to miss his target. Yet other times his makes amazing completions to barely open receivers. (Hence the inconsistent rating i started with.)

    Bottom line:
He is significantly better than Tannehill, and has the POTENTIAL to be great, but he is not there yet, and i am in no way confident he will get there.

Ryan Tannehill knows he’s Marcus Mariota’s backup, period

"Because Marcus Mariota is entering the last year of his contract, and because he hasn’t exactly lived up to expectations, and because the Titans found a backup quarterback with some degree of starting experience, there are some who want to cast what’s happening in Nashville as an open competition.

None of those people are Ryan Tannehill."

Based on what? He's struggling with routine passes against vanilla preseason defenses. He's averaged 5 YPA over 4 drives , while Tannehill has looked good with lesser receiving talent. And has had better efficiency in recent years and high level production that Mariota hasn't even come close to matching. His unwillingness to "assert himself" per reports is a testament to him not really wanting to be the guy. So there's really no reason for us to lie to ourselves and pretend that he's better than he is.
