Long is an undersized linebacker with below-average length and top-end speed. He's an instinctive run defender who fills gaps and sifts through traffic between the tackles. He masks below-average speed by reading the play quickly and chasing with great effort. He shows adequate awareness in zone.

Ultra-productive but undersized, teams will have to decipher how much of his production is translatable and how much came from his brazen, downhill approach. Long plays with a "scared money don't make money" approach that hit jackpots but pulled him out of position more than NFL coaches will be comfortable, with, but teams would rather dial back aggression than try and coach it up. He plays with some twitch, but his lack of size and strength could push him into a role as a backup 4-3 WILL with eventual starter potential in the right scheme.

What LB David Long Jr. brings to the table is a tremendous nose for the football, insane athletic ability, the ability to make plays sideline-to-sideline, and in the backfield due to his quickness. Listed at 5’11” and 225-lbs, it’s apparent that Long doesn’t have the ideal measurables at LB in the NFL, but his play-making ability should certainly catch teams attention. Long does a tremendous job of avoiding blockers, getting off blocks, and shooting gaps to make plays in the backfield. In his four years at West Virginia, Long tallied 246 tackles (39.5 for loss), 12.5 sacks, and 10 passes defended. Long is a guy who could come in and immediately make a difference on special teams, while also having success playing off the ball, and running to the football.

"Personally, I would rather have David Long over Devin Bush for a round or two discount. They have about the same size but Long is more productive and maybe less prone to injury." -- NFC executive

CBS list of prospects listed Long at #163. Good value for pick 188.

Not bad. Could be a solid back up. Kiper just said he is a good tackler and very productive. Only dropped because of his measurables and short arms. Who cares?... if you can play, you can play.
